I LOVE Rx7s. FDs are one hell of a machine, and there is TONS of aftermarket stuff out there. But yes, the newest one you can get in the states is 11 years old (1995). The Turbos need to be rebuilt between 80-100k miles. Don't bash the engines though. My old FC (1986) made it 202,000 miles on the ORIGINAL engine. This was a NA motor though.
And when it comes to the track, 7s are awesome. They have beautiful handling, one of the best handling cars I have ever drove. Sure, the Z has slightly more power, but a 7 will still take a Z on the track. They don't touch 3000 lbs. MUCH lighter than the Z.
Bottom line: FDs are awesome machines, but like others have said, do require some maintenance, especially since even with low miles, the newest Rex around in the US is 1995, and good luck finding one of those. When I have the money to maintain one, I am getting one.

Actually, I just sold my single turbo FD pushing over 450rwhp for my Z this past spring. It was heart breakin cause I had the car since 1993 the only owner. When through 4 engines and a couple of turbos, just too many headaches and too much of a money pit. So far happy with the Z, waiting to go FI until the warrenty runs out

i havent heard much from JDM tuning companies that tuned the Z33 to a insane extent, but i have heard the RE Amemiya RX7 is a beast!

RX-7 races in JGTC 300 (like the Amemiya)
Talk about reliability, endurance, and balance, the Z is a monster compared to the 7. If you can't finish the race, you didn't win it. RX-7 is stuck under 300 hp for reliable racing. What works and what doesn't work.

If you don't have the time, money and pacient, do yourself a favor and don't get an Rx7. The Rx7 is a really nice car but it takes too much work to get it running nicely. A lot of people have been putting LS1's in Rx7's. I don't know much about the LS engines. I've heard a lot of good things about them so research.

Sure the LS-1 is a nice swap for the RX-7 and improves the whole reliability factor but it removes what is essentially the heart of what the RX-7 is, and that's the rotary engine. I'm sorry but without the rotary, it's just not an RX-7

The RX-7s are great cars
Handling is incredible. Capable of almost 1 lateral g on the skidpad on tire technology that is 13 years old now. Classed in SCCA in Superstock along with the likes of Porsche, Lotus, Vipers, Corvettes etc and with only 255 hp
In the Tsukuba battle times...the RX-7 is the reigning champion for lap times for FRs. It is only bested by the Evos, STis, and GTRs
Tuned Battle on the Touge
Final Contenders 350z vs RX-7

This 350z was fast, besting a GTR that had if I recall correctly close to 500 hp with scramble boost.
RX-7s are pretty fast on or off the track...great all around car..that is when they are running right.
