Wow, 500 miles on a tank. My best was a trip from SF to LA, which I did on one tank. That's just about 400 miles. I can't imagine getting 500, but then again, I get real anxious once the DTE hits "---." My typical mileage in the SF Bay Area (mostly freeway) was about 350/tank (roughly 16 gallons) but in Hawaii (almost entirely city), I'm getting closer to 250, sometimes even 200. It may have to do with the heat, or possibly the humidity also, but probably the major problem is the stop and go traffic.

Sorry Doc, but I call BS with good reason. Have you even done the math? If you used every last drop of gas in your tank then maybe it's possible. If you did then you would average 25mpg which is possible if you do nothing but ~speed limit with purely highway driving. But you say you only travel 10-15 miles with the fuel light coming on which means you still have about 3 gallons or ~75 miles worth of gas in the tank? Yes, I say this is impossible..... unless you being pulled by a trailer and you just happen to be idling the whole way
Yes, just do the math.

I'll confirm Doc's findings. I too drive from Livermore, CA. down HWY 5 and obtain 28-30mpg. It's flat straight and I run it at 72-77mph. 70 is the speed limit. I do have Pop Charger, iradium plugs, grounding wires, aG35 Spoiler and generally drive at night. No drafting as I do not like rock chips. I think the Spoiler will actually spoil my mpg but gives me a little downforce which helps me get a smooth stable ride maybe.
With that being said, I can drive from my house to Palm Springs on one tank of gas and light comes on just as I get to the Costco. So it's Costco in Livermore to Costco in Palm Spring and 3.5-4gals left.
438 miles using 16 gals of gas = 27.37mpg which I can improve if I keep my foot out of it and closer to 70mph. It's just too far to keep it that slow. Expecially without cruise control.
Guess I'll have to take a 500 mile long trip and find out if I can actually use those last few gallons. My highest fill so far has been 19.1 gals. With that # and 27mpg. It should be good for 513 miles.
In closing I am pretty sure you can drive from SF to LA on one tank of gas unless you hit traffic. Then, all bets are off.

I average about 400 miles before filling up (needle on empty) and always put in about 16 gallons (topped off). By the fuel gauge from Full to Empty it's always 100 miles per quarter tank. I drive 25 miles each way to/from work, of which 18 is two lane highway. I usually cruise at 78-80 MPH.

Gas Mileage
I drive mixed driving and get on it quite often. My guage usually shows I average 36mph and I get 23.8mpg on average. I go about 380 miles before the light comes on. You could go 500 miles on one tank of gas on the highway before you ran out.

I averaged 30.0 mpg today on a trip from Houston to Dallas. I had one stop in the middle for a few mins. I did not use cc at all. Average speed was 63 mph. My car has 84k. Bill Bailey is legend by the way from the mr2 boards. Just thought I'd throw that in hehe..

I havent made it over 400 miles per tank yet. I guess I can take it a little further. I was always afraid to go 30 miles after light comes on. No wonder I cant ever pump in more than 16 gallons.

im glad i just ran into this thread.
i filled my tank up with only 11 gallons and it said 365 miles until empty...
maybe it said 365 cuz i JUST started my car up or something? but that would be a **** load of miles, and i didnt even gas it to 16 gallons.
