Default 2007 350Z HR...is it really worth it?

I decided to sell my 2003 Z when i moved into my condo around 10 months ago to help buy some nice stuff (flat screen, furniture, etc.) for the condo and now i'm ready to buy another nice car this winter.

I had my heart set on the bmw335i but now that i've seen them on the road, i'm not that into them anymore. THey just don't have the same appeal to me as the Z and am not going to spend that kind of money on a car i'm not crazy for. Not to mention, i've had a bmw in the past and they are very expensive to mod. I'm also not very crazy for the interior. Keep in mind this wont' be my daily driver.

Now that the new HR engine is coming out it looks pretty promising and might give the Z that extra performance it deserves from the factory. I've done a lot of searching on the board for info and it seems the engine will have 315 hp. My QUESTION is, Do you guys think the new HR will really give the car a nice performance boost or is it going to be slight and disappointing like, IMO, the rev-up engine was?

dont think the 07 will have the hr motor....

is your Z paid off? how much do you owe? im not bashing you in any way but chances are its not paid off(dont take offense...neither is mine)....so you have to figure how upside you are in your Z...lets say you owe 20k and your cars is worth 16k you gotta pull 4k out of somewhere plus the downpayment for the new Z ....is the hr really worth it? no imo...i figure i could put that extra money towards a built block and twins..but thats just me....plus with a built block you could easily manhandle the hr....

just my opinion

I think it's going to be a mild bump in performance. Might not be completely disappointing but not a "holy ****" jump.

Figure the original vq35de had 287 hp at the crank. Most cars I've seen dyno at about 241 or so. That's about 16% drivetrain loss...

Assuming the same loss on 315 hp at the crank and the result is ~264 whp.

NOTE: This is just a quick estimate of numbers I've thrown together while slipping in some my350z forum time at work!! Please don't flame if it's a little off!

IMO, it would be a better jump if the vq35de pumped out closer to 350hp.

As usual, the best answer is always the most simple: drive the car.

I think the Extra Rev 7,500rpm will make a big difference.

Please re-read his post. He doesn't have a Z.

And yes, the '07 will get the HR engine. Refer to www.nissannews.com.

Blackzero6- Its been confirmed that the 07 will have the HR to the best of my knowledge, and my Z was sold months ago so yes its paid off.

I understand i have to drive the car in the end, just trying to gain some opinions on this new engine from fellow z drivers. Its hard to find another car with the value of the Z to be honest with you guys. Regarding new cars, there is nothing that comes close to it in its price range and performance and reminds me of why i bought my car in 03 to begin with.

There can't really be any opinions on an engine that isn't out yet however we can always speculate. On paper the new engine looks to be fantastic. I'd personally wait as it seems to be more efficient than the previous while still gaining more power and a higher redline. According to Nissan's charts and graphs acceleration is greatly improved. Even if it's half of what Nissan says than IMHO it'll still be worth it.

You can't just look at the numbers anymore, as someone suggested. It's the way the power is put down. 300hp on the DE may be a lot different from 300 on the HR. Having owned both an 04 and now an 06....I absolutely love the revup engine. I was very disappointed with the 287 hp engine as it lost its thrust in the upper RPM's IMO(hence the reason I went turbo). The revup cured that problem and I expect even more from the HR. Only time and test drives will tell the true story.
