Just wanted to share that my gas mileage has increased by 3 mpg. That's a 14% increase over what I used to get (21 mpg). Pretty cool. No hp mods, not changing my driving style/habits, just breaking the 25,000 mile mark did it. Almost immediately after crossing 25K it has increased gas mileage.

Loss of power? No. I smoked an older E36 M3 today from a rolling start; wasn't sure if he wanted to run, he wasn't sure I wanted to either. We both held 1st until we noticed the engine rev rising. Then I heard his passenger say, "Yeah, he's going." I'm not much for drag, but I did have him by a car length and continually increasing by the time I reached 3rd. Then I let off, because street racing is stupid, and breaking 60 mph is good enough for a rolling start. He then let off too when he noticed he was catching me.

How about you others that have had your car for more than 25K? Did any of you notice your car increase gas mileage?
Could it be winter gasoline? I pumped the allegedly bad stuff, ARCO, for two tanks now. I didn't notice this increase last winter.

 

Didnt know 25k was the magic number, im at 24,500 now so fingers crossed. Puff, puff, pass...cough.

 

I bought my car in Miami. I drove it from Miami back to NJ. I was able to achieve high 20's w/o a problem on the maiden voyage.

The more mileage you put on though, the better it seems to get.

 

i dont know how 25000 would do that but congrats. lol.

 

I'm at 36K and have always averaged about 24-25 or so with mostly city driving.

 

when I set the cruise at 65mph I get consistant 31,32mpg readings. While we are on the subject of mpg, when mods are done like 500hp tt setups and what not, Does the computer compensate for the extra fuel used or is the computer just using a set formula to determine mpg?

 

Interesting. I already get 24mpg in the city at 5k miles.

Mine averages 24mpg; pedal to the metal half the time.

 

I get about 19mpg in the city and i'm at 13,500 miles. :-(

 

I average about 20-21 MPG

After adding the popcharger, it rose to 22-23 MPG,
but has gone back down since I can't help but rev it when I hear the sound from the popcharger.

I'm just broke 20K a few days ago.

Would a tune-up help with MPG?

 

My mpg sucks too; I average 19mpg with mostly city driving.

 

I get 20 flat with all city driving, not sure how others are getting 25 in the city as I harldy ever shift higher than 3000 rpms

You guys drive a car with a 3.5L engine. Big displacment equals bad gas mileage, especially in the city where you are constantly stopping and going.

 

for some reason mine went up too. i would always be at 18-20 depending how hard i drove. but over the last 3 weeks i have been at 22.5 -23. .. maybe cause i hit 45k.. lol but seriously. i guess because i have been using 93 octane over 91 that i always used. ????

 

Well I don't know. It might be because I have played with the throttle so much, I know exactly how far to press the gas pedal. It doesn't really matter when you shift as much as how far you press the gas pedal. The air/fuel mixture needs to stay consistent. So even though you're shifting at a low RPM, if you're standing on the throttle, the throttle body will be open very wide, letting in lots of air, meaning pouring on lots of fuel. It's the same thing at higher rpm's too. If I decide to hold 4th up to 50 mph, I can still maintain 23-24 mpg as long as I'm not standing on the throttle.
I dunno, maybe my foot has even better control now than ever after 25K. Try driving with the radio off everyday (sometimes I forget I even have one) and pay attention to your throttle and smoothness of shifting. Maybe learning that is what made me get better gas mileage.
Like I said in another thread, the throttle-by-wire is much more sensitive than a hard-line cable. As soon as the pedal is pressed, the throttle body starts to open. On our older cars, we could almost rest our foot on the accelerator without opening up the throttle more than idle. Then when we press the pedal far enough to cause tension on the line, finally the throttle would begin to open.
Does that sound right?
