just reset your edu to run super rich and let the fire burn baby.
imho backfire is reserved for super high powered race cars, otherwise its just a waste.

In my previous Z, it would backfire whenever I left it in a 1st or 2nd gear and let off the gas to leave the engine slow the car down instead of applying the brakes.

Its not backfire, its afterfire. Unlit fuel in the exhaust. Backfire is bad for the engine, afterfire is fun. Happens with alot of turbocharged cars since they run much richer than normal.

if a turbo car backfires a lot, does it mean that the car is not tuned properly? ie its not making as much power as it could?

im not exactly sure about the specifics, but i know one of those is actually good somehow for a turbo, or something, i remember hearing about it somewhere but know nothing about it

Turbo cars are likely to backfire if 1) they use an airflow meter and 2) there is a blow-off valve vented to atmosphere. That allows metered air to escape the system, but the ECU still delivers additional fuel for the air that is no longer reaching the engine. Then that super rich charge ignites in the exhaust system.

But this only occurs momentarily, on lift, which is when the BOV vents.

Turbos cars run rich for two reasons: 1) More air + more fuel = more power. Since most turbos can use all the extra fuel that can be fed to them, they are tuned to run rich for the following reason; 2) by running rich, the excess gas actually cools the combustion chamber, helping to keep detonation at bay.

A non-FI car running rich is not good. It causes you to lose power, not gain. It doesn't really help the engine's longevity either, since most NA's don't run quite that hot.

Alot of turbo cars (including race cars) are designed to "pop" out the exhaust when they let off the gas in an effort to keep the turbo spooled. The "pop" in the exhaust gives the turbo a little boost of speed, thus making for less turbo lag once you get back on the gas.

This isnt correct, the turbo has nothing to do with the exhaust at all. Turbo just shoves more air into the engine it has absolutely nothing to do with getting more "pop" or speed from afterfire coming out of the exhaust. Turbo cars just run much richer that is where the afterfire comes from. Extra unburnt gas going into the exhaust and igniting because of the heat.
