Grr need help
I know ive asked this before but i forget fast. Im trying to get my shifts as smooth as possible especially 1st to 2nd. How do you guys do it. Drop the clutch and release slowly or slow clutch in and realease fast? anyone?
thanks.
thanks.
Ive been doing some reading and I see that a lot of people complain about this same problem. Transmission noise and shifting between 1st and 2nd is something that every Z owner says is a disadvantage. I just dont really understand what the problem is? How can the tranmission be noisy and what is it from shifting between 1st and 2nd that everyone hates?

Smooth, Granny shifts make for short clutch life. Granny mite be impressed but tell her to buy ur next clutch.

I have the advantage that I know machines. With a tranny, I can see in my minds eye everything that is happening--- clutch,syncros,gears,shafts,forks,bearings----all doing their thing. I forget that some guys are just learning what I was learning at 7 years old.
Get used to it and before u know it will be like putting ur shoes on in the morning.
There are sooooo many threads about shifting and guys getting into a frenzy about shift points etc. It just takes time and most answers will come from ur own experience, not, in the case of shifting, from a forum.
As far as a "smooth" shift, Its a matter of honing ur motor skills, It just cant be taught

^eh that sounds like a stretch, I'd stick with oem fluids man. Best way to get smoother shifts is to practice, no one can tell you one thing that will make you better, it has to be you who figures it out from experience.
I don't mean any disrespect to the OP or anyone else, for that matter. But I've been on this forum for about 4 months now, and I can't help but notice that these 'how do I shift?' type threads are quite prevalent. I think it was just last week that I was reading some thread on whether to downshift or coast in neutral before turning into a parking lot!
Anyway, it just dawned on me -- this must be why manufacturers are coming out with less and less models available with MTs, because I bet the dealerships have to deal with these bone-headed questions as well. Can you imagine having to deal with a customer who comes in and says 'Yeah man, I bought this car from you guys last week. It doesn't shift as smoothly as my last car that had an auto-tranny. Fix it.' Or 'Can you tell me how to turn into a parking lot smoothly when driving this car? It has a MT and I'm not used to that.' Imagine having to deal with this hundreds of times, over and over again, and having to restrain yourself from giving these people a verbal beat-down. I couldn't do it.
MTs aren't silky smooth. That's just the nature of MT, especially if the engine is torquey. Get used to it. I've been driving for 20 years, MT all of those years, and the only car I would say comes close to having a silky smooth MT was my last car, an S2000. But I think the smoothness was due more to that car's lack of low-end torque than anything else. Sorry for ranting, but I'm just frustrated because time and time again, I get interested in a car only to find out that MT isn't an option (Infiniti M45 comes to mind, they've just removed the MT option from the Maxima for another ex.), and it's all these people who don't understand the nature of MT that are ruining MT-availability in the marketplace for the rest of us.
