Even if your drag racing or track driving, just always be calm and focused on your stick, clutch and especialy your engine sound. I always pay very close attention to my engine, and if im doing any kind of driving other then lazy put-put around town driving.. the music is OFF. Noone is perfect, we all make mistakes... just don't let it get the best of you Seriously though, I don't know how many of you guys do it..maybe i'm just a little whacko in the head regarding this but I spend sometimes up to 30 minutes in my car while it's off just shifting gears practicing all different shifts... 1-2-3-4-5-6, 5-2, 6-3, etc etc...

I wonder if anyone here with the auto mis-shifted, like thought they were in gear and actually was in drive and floored the gas while pushing the shifter into neutral redlining the tach.

if the check engine lights off you should be fine, thankfully the gears are short. have the valves checked out to be on the safe side

You guys must learn to chill when driving.

And hold that stick the correct way. You’re not masturbating so don’t grab the stick the way you’d grab your thingy. Just cup your hand and rest it over the shifter when you’re about to change gear.

Up-shifts from 3rd to 4th are a simple pull on the shifter. The spring preload will take care of aligning the lever into the correct gate… No lateral load needed.

Also, don’t try to save time while shifting. The speed at which the gears meshes have little to do with the action on the lever. The synchros need to do their job, and they do that at a set speed.

^^^^ What he said + 100

For every group of two gears that are on the same "line" if you were to look at the shift pattern, you have to use your hand differently.

For gear 1-2, cup the gearlever from the passenger side, gear 3-4 you simply push or pull the lever from the top, gear 5-6 you cup it from the driver side and push it away from you.

Hope what I'm saying makes sense. Ideally you should have one different hand position for every gear you are about to shift into.

dang good to hear the Z is ok. Ive seen a video of some dude in a RSX miss shift and he didnt press on the clutch and boom 13000rpms and blew the motor.

Idk if anyone has done this but I drive a tracter(6wheel truck/ small 18wheeler) at work well the annoying part is the damn R is next to 1st but theres no safe gaurd preventing from goin into R on accident well ive done it once trying to slow down ****...went right into R and all I felt was the tracter hop and smacked my head on the ceiling then it stalled went forward then smacked my head on the rear cab after moving back quickly.

I think that means your girl friend can't sit on it either while you're trying to shift. Hehehee! :-)

And that's why I took out my B&M short shifter (It's been sitting in my closet for over a year now). Makes it much harder to shift and I think I actually increased, rather than shorten, shift time. I also noticed that if I use the proper driving technique of having both hands on the wheel and only going for the shifter when I'm going to shift, immediately placing it back onto the wheel when in gear, I shift alot better than if I'm resting my hand on the shifter.

Done it once, on the track... went from redline of 3rd into 2nd. Tires locked up and I quickly disengauaged the clutch. Next morning car shook kinda violently when I first started it up. I quickly shut off the car and turned it back on 2 minutes later. Started fine, no problems since... this was like 2 years ago lol

I think almost everyone at one time or another has done this (including myself)...It just falls under the **** happens category, thats all...If everything seems fine after this happens and you dont throw a cel and the car is not running funny then Im sure the car is fine...

i think this would mostly belong in this thread, but i was engaging in a bit of a speedy start tonight from a dead stop... hit 1st and got to about 6k and didnt quite get it into 2nd and shot the rpm's to ~6k again in neutral...how bad is this for my motor?

haha you can't drop from 6th to 2nd, they're on the same shifting side now ... trying to drop from 6th to 3rd, but missing that and hitting 1st .. WOW!

I'll bet 90% of Z guys have done what the OP did. I've done it 3 or 4 times over 4 + years . It feels to me that the shifter coming out of third "naturally"
wants to go into second rather than fourth. Getting into fourth takes a bit of deliberate effort & focus.

You might want to have your linkage checked.

Mine goes straight from 3 to 4 all the time.
