Default Geared down

when i bought my Z ('03 6MT) the previous owner informed me that he had just put a new tranny in and it was geared down. i have heard this term but not sure what benefits it has and how it affects my daily driving. i haven't driven another Manual Z to feel a difference. any knowledge will help.

The only thing I can think of is the optional 3.9 diff. gears.

He probably swapped the final drive to make the gears shorter.... 2nd gear in a stock '03 will top out at 60mph, 3rd gear will top out at 85.... if he swapped the final drive your gears will top out sooner than that.

What would be the reason for doing this?

All 350Z manual transmissions have the same gearing. Haven’t the faintest what you are referring to. Sorry.

Check your speed at 2250 RPM in 6th gear. If its 60 MPH @ 2250, then your still OEM.

I suspect the PO is BSing you.

don't mean to sound stupid. but if i accelerate faster then i would hit my top speed faster meaning i would beat another stock '03 Z off the line.

given equal drivers, yes, but you would not hit your top speed. you will lose your top speed cause you run out of gear
