Default Traction Control

When you turn off the traction in the Z does it completely turn off?
In my friends BMW 330 and other cars pushing the button only turns it off partially.

I just posted about this here https://my350z.com/forum/2003-2009-nissan-350z/240016-burnout-bouncing.html

I don't think it's fully turned off in the Z. Otherwise, the modded Zs would be fish tailing A LOT More. I have 268rwhp and still can't fish tail. It's always a little cute "chirp" burnout. But I guess that's what you want

TCS is off completely, VDC is not.

Separate from that though, if you hold the brakes and gas it at the same time (to spin the wheels) the ECU will cut power.

VDC won't bother you unless you are going ***** out around a corner. You turn off that TCS, and its not hard at all to screw up. VDC isn't going to save you.

i use to have a bmw330, you can turn it all the way off by pressing the button and holding it down for 5 seconds until the brake light turns yellow in the dash board, but be careful, i did that in the rain and it was crazy

Yes. You can turn if OFF completely; same for VDC if you have it. Push the button once, and it is OFF. Turn the car ignition OFF and then ON, and TC (or VDC if equipped) is back ON, and remains ON until you push the button again (to turn it OFF). It is one push and instant on the Z.

Your friend is correct about the BMW. This it is different from the Z (which turns OFF with a simple switch click). My Jeep Commander works like the BMW. Push on the switch once and the first layer of safety equipment (aka Traction Lock) turns OFF. Push and hold for 5 seconds and VDC (or whatever additional roll-over sensors the car has as equipment) is OFF.

So, why the difference? Well, you get the insurance discount on the equipment, no matter how it turns OFF (instantly or a 5 second hold). Z drivers want to turn it OFF instantly when appropriate. BMW and Jeep drivers are older (like I am), and need the additional protection because they can't drive as well as Z drivers (as in the case BMW drivers), or they are off-road and need more protection (as is the case with Jeep drivers).

Z Power!!

yes tcs turns off completely. Even if its on, it lets the tires spin for a second, then cuts power.

This is not correct. TCS or VDC can be turned off and on by the switch (button) without restarting the car. TCS is off completely when you turn it off. VDC has been shown to still interfere in certain situations even when "off". This can be defeated by installing a switch inline with the power to the yaw sensor under the center console, at which point both the VDC OFF light and SLIP light turn on and stay on until the car is restarted. For the track, some people pull the ABS fuse under the hood near the master cylinder to kill both VDC and ABS (I think it also disables the speed sensitive steerting) for complete control.

I've heard VDC never fully goes away. It goes away enough though. I've spent alot of time in snowy/icy parking lots with it off and if it still kicks in it doesn't do much and it does it at the point of no return anyway.

I think he was just saying that if you turn your car off and back on, you have to remember to turn TCS off again.

Ah, yeah; prob. right. At any rate, the rest of what I wrote explains the workings in detail. This has been covered in depth before.

I have a 2006 G35 Coupe, when i hid VDC off it turns off but not completely. I can easily burnout through my 1st gear with it off but if you do an insane turn it will kick right in to save you. The only way to turn it completely off is, hit the VDC button and do a donut and the SLIP light will remain on for the rest of the time your car is on which means VDC is now completely off. Tried it in a loaner G and it worked

Since base does not have any traction control, will it be harder to drive compared to other trims at places where traction control comes in handy?

It may be harder to drive if you are inexperienced at driving a high horsepower rear wheel drive vehicle. The more horsepower, the more likely an inexperienced driver will break out the back end of a rwd car and stuff the car into a wall or spin out on a turn. This tendency is exaggerated in the rain. With experience, you learn to respect the ability of the car to break the rear tires loose so you become more "prudent" in your driving. You also learn to compensate for "power on" loss of traction with gentle lift off the throttle and steering into the skid. In fact, you may discover that it is fun to power out of a turn and drift a little wide, especially on a dirt road.
