Angry My Brand New 350Z is pinging!!

I bought a new 350z Sat 12/30/07. Drove it off the lot and the following day, I noticed that when the air is on it pings in 2/3/4/5 gears if I am at 2000 rpms and below and I give it gas. I am in no way lugging the engine at all. I thought that it may be the gas the dealer put in, maybe 87 or something, but I ran the tank out and put a full tank of 91 Union 76 gas and it's still doing it. I took it to the dealer this morning to have it checked out. The car was on the lot since 3/06 so maybe it was the gas sitting in the system for so long, but even still a brand new car pinging. I think I'm goin got refuse to take the car back until they fixed the problem. Anybody else have this problem with their new Z's. Thanks.

Matt

Unfortunately it is a common problem with the REVUP motors. Try to find some 93 octane or at elast a gas station with three seperate nozzels. I use BP 93 and have not heard any pinging, but I know that it is not available everywhere.

You need to be using premium unleaded gas only, 93 or higher. Also, are you shifting properly?

+1 on the high octane, if you can get it, but If you go full throttle below 2000rpm in 3-6, that's "lugging" it IMO.

Is that Lakewood, California? If that's the case, all we can get is 91 octane here.

There have been many, many posts on this topic. I too freaked out when I heard my brand new new car doing this ("spark knock" is more accurate). The concensus is that it is normal.

Yeah, BP 93 runs the best here too.

It's all about the additives to raise the octane. I've tried them all, and my car ran quicker and trapped higher running the BP 93, than any other so called 93 octane gas I can get here.

I also avoid the uni-pumps, unless I'm on a trip and the last person used 93 octane.

I wish we could get Sunoco 94.

Even 10-25% throttle below 3000 RPM will induce some knock. California gas sucks.

One last note, I did an experiment a while back when filling up. I put 25% 100 octane unleaded at a local 76 station and the problem went away, albeit temporarily. It is definitely fuel related.

maybe hes talkin about the sound the tranny makes while giving it gas under 2k rpms. the VQ dosent like being under 2k rpms, ive had that noise ever since i got the car and it sounds more like drivetrain noise than pinging.

Thanks for all the post guys. I actually did a search for this topic and was unable to locate the link that was politely pointed out to me above, thank you. Yeah, I live in Lakewood, CA just had the car back at Cerritos Nissan where I bought it and Brian Tanaka, the very very nice service manager basically said it's normal for our gas here and to try 76 or Chevron, nothing else. He said to try and keep the engine at 2500 rpms when giving it gas. He also said that the motors are built to be high revving beasts as long as they are broken in properly. He said nothing above 4k rpms for the first 1000 miles which I have been obeying, then for the first 5000 miles nothing above 5k rpms and no full throttle for proper break in. He said they are like race motors and that you have to break them in nicely and theyn they weill give you years of service to 7k and beyond. He said if you break it in nicely you can run it 7k frequently without hurting the engine. He also said that the oil consumption problem is related to people not breaking their engines in properly. We'll see cause I'm follwing break in instructions to the t. Anyways, thanks for everyone's input. The car is still pretty sweet :-)

yea i have the same exact problem and i am very annoyed of it
i have an 06 and now have about 6700 miles on it
i went to the dealer twice mayb 3 times and asked about the pinging noise
one of the guys said try to use chevron because i only use 91 oct from 76
he also said that in automatic cars, at 2000 rpm it automatically downshifts and that our cars are supposedly to be in the high rpms
but being in higher rpms consume more gas?
