Default empty gas tank fills to 15 gallons?

I've experienced the early shut off when filling up a few times so perhaps this issue is related (hopefully its not too expensive as my '03 is out of warranty now), but i've never been able to fill up more than 15 gallons. When it's dead empty i'll still only get 16.

Shouldn't i be getting something closer to 20? What could be the problem here?

Note: meter shows gas tank as full (or really close to it) after a fill up.

I have a 2003 and I have always noticed that. When the low gas light comes on and the computer starts flashing 50 miles to empty I head to the gas station (usually do not wait that long). I fill it up and it holds about 16 gallons. I get about 23 mpg so it should hold about 18 gallons. What I think is the design of the filler neck causes the gas pump to shut off early so you never can get 20 gallons in the tank but more like 18. Besides a 20 gallon tank for that car is huge. The Ford GT that gets 13 mpg holds 16.9 gallons and most cars in the Zs class hold 15.

Well the thing is, i heard that other guys regularly get 18 gallons per fillup. Just wanted to know what other people are getting to see if 15-16 is normal. Normal fillups for me at about 1/8 are coming in at like 13 which sucks because its a waste to have a 20 gal tank and only be able to fill half of it.

The most I've filled up with is 19 gallons. After the "distance to empty" shows 0 or "---" I can usually drive for close to 100km.

I have a 2004 base Z.
I always fill up when the light turns on, and I put in around 15-16 gallons.
At that point, the pump auto-shuts itself down.
I heard people drive crazy distances even after they get the gaslight on.
It leads me to suspect that there's still 1-4 gallons left even when the gaslight comes on.
I'm too scared to try to drive when the computer reads less than 30 miles dte.

ahh...sounds SORTA normal then. If i fill up right when the gas light comes on, i'll still only get 14 gallons but at least it's close. Other people getting the same thing?

Same issue here.

I usually will wait until the light comes on until I fill up. Usually I'll be able to squeeze 15-16 gallons in.

Sometimes I have the same thing, some pumps seem to do it more often than others though. The most I've gotten is 16 gallons, and it's at the full mark. Sometimes I can only get 12-13, and thats with moving the pump where it's only a couple of inches into the filler hose.

I have a 2003 and the I still drive long after it's supposedly "empty".. there is still about 4 gallons left in the tank after it says empty...
curious to why some people don't go below a 1/4 of a tank, and always fill up then...

I usually wait until the DTE reas " -- " before i fill up, that usually ends up being 17+ gallons. If i fill up when the light comes on, thats probably 15 or 16 gallons.

i think this is a common issue...
i have a G.. i noticed that often i get 15+ gallons left when i fill up at 1/8 a tank or less

yesterday i decided to test it.. and ran out of ***** before i ran out of gas... the needle was solidly below the E line and i was able to fit in 4 gallons...

i remember my old firebird would stop running as soon as the needle hits empty. One time it stops right in front of a gas station.

When the light comes on, that means you have atleast 3 gallons of gas left.

One a side note: my old fox body mustang i used to get about 12 mpg in that car. One time i burned it down to 1/2 gallon just to see how far i could push it... hahha.

I have an 03 and have never had any issues with filling mine up. It always takes it all. A easy way to solve your problem is just fill it up half way, it saves weight.
