All new cars sold in the US have them now, from my understanding. I think Manufacturers had like between 2001 to 2006 to comply with the DOT mandate.

Congress passed the Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentations Act, also called the TREAD Act, in 2000 in response to a major recall of defective tires that created unsafe driving conditions.

The TREAD Act mandates that new vehicles less than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, sold in the United States, be equipped with tire pressure monitoring systems, or TPMS, beginning with the 2006 model year. TPMS systems alert drivers when the pressure in a tire falls more than 25 percent below the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure. The TREAD Act affects passenger cars, light trucks and buses. Light-duty vehicles with dual-rear axles are excluded.

Indirect TPMS systems use the vehicle’s ABS system to calculate the difference in tire diameters and approximate tire pressure.

Direct TPMS systems include small sensors that are installed inside the tires. These sensors monitor tire pressure and continually relay this information, via radio signals, to the vehicle’s electronic control unit (ECU). If tire pressure falls below required limits, a warning light on the instrument panel alerts the driver about the problem.

The TREAD Act requires vehicle manufacturers to equip 20 percent of their 2006 model year vehicles with TPMS. The number increases to 70 percent of 2007 model vehicles, and to 100 percent of all 2008 model vehicles.

 

+1 on '05 Base having them.

 

Just because it's a run flat doesn't mean that there is still air pressure in the tire if you get a flat. Just means the sidewall wont collapse all the way and you can still drive on it for a bit if you get a flat.

I have a 2005 base and I have it.. that is until I sold my stock wheels to a member on this site with them inside Im so stupid some times, I forgot to get them out for my Volks. Well I bet hes stoked...

 

the older models with tps supposedly show individual tire pressure. whereas the newer (07 at least) only has a led light up showing that a tire is flat. not which one though.

 

i have an 07 base model and it doesnt have it....

 

for 07 the tps is not shown on the pods. it's on your main speedometer and is in the design of a horseshoe with lines under it??? lol can't remember. it lights up when tires are flat that is all. nothing more.

 

I was wrong..... they don't have runflats.... I've riden on my tires on accident as low ast 6psi and didn't even know.... stiff sidewalls but theyre not runflats....

 

^^^Blazed54 is correct in describing how its displayed. All the models have it, but it isn't shown in the trip computer/pod like it was in the earlier Z's, its shown in your main gauge cluster. Look for it when you start the car. The light is supposed to signify a tire bulging out (horseshoe shape), and the squiggly lines underneath represent the tread.

If you valve stems have the silver caps, you have the TPMS, though without even knowing this I know you have it.

 

07 Base - Yes it has tire pressure monitor.

would changing the tire size or rim affect the system in anyway? what about when rotating the tires would it affect the TPMS?

 

from the sounds of it, it started in 05. I know for a fact that 06's have them and in the 3 pod cluster, it tells you the pressure of EACH tire. However and unfortunately(i'm still kind of upset about this) in 07 they took these out. Probably to cut cost. The car does TPS but it does NOT tell you the pressure in each wheel. It will only give you a warning light if the air is low in your tires. Again, starting 07 they did this.(i have an 07 base)

 

What do I have to do when I change rim and to keep TPM functioning? Are there parts I have to take out from old rim and put into new rim?
