Shifting from 1st-2nd
Letting out the clutch too fast while not hitting the gas fast enough to catch the RPM drop will cause you to jurk into gear. Does your "slip" light come on or tires chirp alot? Ease off the clutch while slightly giving it some gas. Unless you're trying to race rice boy to the next light, that'll probably help you. I think?

If you're trying to learn to shift properly, letting the clutch out too fast probably isn't the problem.... it's all about timing. You can drop the clutch(not that you would actually want to)... and if you do it at the right moment it will be virtually seamless. It's all about matching RPM, yes, even on upshifts.
The Z has a heavy clutch/flywheel...and there is more spacing in between 1st and 2nd than the other gears..... so the higher you take the RPM, the longer you have to wait for the RPM to drop for a proper revmatched up shift. You can always speed shift, but that's another topic.

Agree with above comments. The timing of the 1-2 shift with respect to gas and clutch is the most critical for smoothness. What affects this is the relatively low gearing in combination with vehicle speed and rpm. Any tendency to lurch is definitely felt. If you shift in exactly the same way at the 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 or 5-6 gears, you won't notice it as much.
In much the same way as you balance throttle and clutch for a smooth start, you'll need to find the right amount of gas and clutch for the 1-2 upshift.
