1200 miles....now what?
Should I go get an oil change now since the break in period is over? Will this be better than waiting until 3700 miles? I dont care how little it helps.
Lets put it this way. It WON'T hurt your car getting an oil change (unless you get the wrong oil). I didn't change my oil after intial break-in. I change my oil every 3 months or 3XXX miles. My car runs fine. I have an '06 and I don't burn oil either.
I have recently been criticized on these boards for changing oil TOO frequently, so you should take this response w/ a grain of salt.
I've owned many, many sports /performance cars and motorcycles over my 50+ years and have raced/ autocrossed most of them. I have always changed oil more frequently than recommended.
My '04 ZR has 44k miles w/all the bolt on and exhaust mods and a KJR pulley, and lots of suspension/wheel/ tire mods as well. I drive the car as I believe it was intended to be driven. I change oil every 1k miles (which is what got me flamed in an unrelated post). It costs me about $30. I have had ZERO problems with my engine/drivetrain, and remain a firm believer in frequent oil and other fluid swaps. It's the cheapest insurance you can buy.

Highway-Thanks. I've been around too long, built too many cars, and raced too many tracks to care much about what the kids say.
I place my trust in the experienced members on these boards, and in my own experiences. Thanks for the affirmation.

Not so long ago, oil change recomendations were 5000 miles, oils were sufficent and motors had more blow by that contaminated the oil, but it worked great. Now the recommendation is 3000 miles and motors burn cleaner than they ever have, plus we now have synthetics.
If ur worried about "shavings" on a new motor, change it at 50 miles and get on with ur 3000 mile-whatever from there. What shavings that are there, if any will be trapped by the filter on the first pass anyways. IMO a new motor needs some friction to break in and seat properly. At 1200 now ---Id just leave it alone til 3000
Whats wrong here is that oil companys planted the seed to go from the 5000-3000 cycle---HUGE PROFIT INCREASE !! HUGE !!!!!!! <<<< Billions of Dollars.
1000-1200 miles as a scheduled change ???? I DONT think so---- If u want to feed the greedy bastards more money while u complain about the price of Gas----Knock urself out
Dont let urself be manipulated by advertising whether it be Dishsoap or Engine oil

(I got oil changes free for life w/purchase at Cardinale Nissan in Seaside, CA - best car buying experience I've ever had - so it was even more of a no brainer for me.)
i changed my oil when i hit ~1500miles...i wanted to do it at 1200miles but i didn't have the time. A little off topic but I have a question for you guys...should i change my oil every 3months even tho i don't drive 3500miles during that 3 month period? My Z is not my daily driver so i actually don't put that many miles on it...so will it hurt the engine if i change my oil every 6months because thats when i actually drive 3500miles?
have you tried having your oil sent out for anaylysis after 1k miles? i think 1k is a bit early but it couldn't hurt
