Nah, if it was an RX-8, it would be miles per motor instead of gallons. Friend of mine at work finally got rid of his after the 3rd motor swap and got himself a 350Z.

Ah...my perception of Z owners stereotypical view of RX-8's is forming fairly quickly. Thanks for speeding up the process, I'll know what to watch out for

Well it is true, they get what, 20mpg on the highway or so?

No one is gonna mention they run circles around us in the handling department stock vs. stock though, hehe.

I do about 70% highway driving and I'm getting around 20mpg so far, maybe a little less. Not sure if this figure will rise as I only have 600 miles on the car. But to be honest if gas mileage was a serious consideration I wouldn't buy a sports car, period. I'd have stuck with the Mazda 3 I had previously.

Would I love an extra 5mpg? Sure, who wouldn't. I spend about $35-40 on gas per week so I'd be saving, what, $8 a week, something like that?

Every car has its pros and cons, it's all about whether you can live with the cons so you can enjoy the pros

That's would be a pretty bad assumption.

(Not that I've ever run my Z or any car till the engine stopped running) but if we assumed he burned 20 gallons, then the engine should've stopped running and he'd have to have pushed his car into the gas station or he'd have to return to his immobilized car w/a gas can.

That's BS, there are more VQ being taken back due to oil consumption.

He probably only got 13 miles in the tank. At one point, i could only get 200 miles per tank because the car couldnt take in more fuel than 10 gallons

i've gotten as low as 7 mpg and as high as 30+ mpg. are your tire pressures set right? that could have a huge inpact on mileage as well as alignment.

I don't drive very long. Average about 15 minutes per drive. I'm not using any calculations for my MPG. I'm just going by what the drive computer says. Also, I still have the 8, it's my wife's car now. And yes, the Z seems to get better MPG.

Well, the driving I do is mostly city with a lot of stop and gos--stop signs mostly. There are a few hills I have to go up as well. But I know I go faster than 25mph...

How short are your drives? Short drives will also kill your mileage. When I lived in WA and drove little (much of it city), it wasn't unusual to see my calculated mileage (on my 5AT) down into the 16s or 17s. Now w/my current commute (~8-9 minutes of city and expressway, not much stopping + 20 mins of highway at ~67 - 80 mph), I get ~21-23 mpg according to my calculations (trip computer is off by 0-1 mpg).

FWIW, when Consumer Reports tested an 05 Zr w/manual, they got 14 city, 27 highway, 20 mpg overall.
I don't use the A/C and don't do anything habitual except the warm up. That's about 4-5minutes every morning...how does the drive computer calculate avg. speed? Does it calculate time/speed?

Judging by the way the OP isn't answering the question, most likely he realized that his calculations aren't right.

Yep, your combination of short drives, stop and go, low speeds, lots of idling AND warmup is killing your mileage.

Stop warming it up. You're just wasting gas. Per http://www.cartalk.com/content/features/fueleconomy/ (site is by the Click and Clack guys) "Unless it's below freezing, cars don't need to be warmed up at all. Driving them gently is the best warm up there is. If it's 25 degrees out, you might want to let it warm up for 30 seconds. If it's 10 degrees out, warm it up for a minute. If it's -10 degrees out, move somewhere warmer."

Your speed during the warmup and idling is 0 and that's very likely counting against the average speed on the trip computer. You're also getting 0 mpg during warmup and idling which most definitely is going to count against the trip computer and real world/calculated mpg.

As I said, when CR tested a 05 manual Zr, they also got 14 city in their tests so your # isn't that surprising.

If you're really psycho and want to get really good mileage, you can try some of the insane techniques of hypermilers like this guy http://hybridfest.com/MotherJones.htm. Your route may not be conducive to this though.

you're filling up 20 gallons of fuel and your odometer says 260?...i seriously doubt that you're filling up 20 gallons...that means you would be completely out of gas!!!!!!!!

Had the same problem after picking up my Z 3 weeks ago. At first I thought the car had a small tank after doing some reading found out there was something wrong. Brought it to the Stealership and Under Warranty the Air Bypass valve in the Tank was bad. Still waiting on the part to come in for them to replace it.
