yeah because people don't realize how they're supposed to calculate MPG until someone explains how to do it four or five times. x-D

The EPA numbers are almost always way too high the combined and city mileage. See http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/how_tested.shtml and http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml for some high level details of the old and new tests. If you look at the tables, you'll notice the city tests has an avg. speed of 20 mph and top speed of 56. The highway test has an avg. speed of 48 and max of 60. In the old tests, the acceleration was very slow and they never used AC.
Hey man. Thanks for all the data. You know what I tried? I reset the MPG and avg. MPH calculator the other day. Since, I've cut my warm up times from waiting for the needle to hit near the middle to just giving it about 30 sec. Originally, I planned to cut to warm up to zero...but I guess old habbits die hard and you really can't teach an old dog new tricks. Also, I ususally go up a hill around 45 or so. Since my "experiment," I've been going up at 35mph and I've been shifting 1st-2nd at 2500-2800RPMs and most of the other gears right at 3k. If I'm in 4th, and will not be accelerating, I'll skip 5th and go straight to 6th. Since then, my avg. MPG has improved from 14 to 17.5. Not great or hybrid territory but it's something.

Now, I'm not a petro-monger and, like I said before, am not really sweating MPG...afterall it is a sports car. However, to learn new techniques to get more miles helps when the pockets run thin every now and again. I'll keep trying this and see if I can't break 20MPG. I'm still breaking in the motor, so I won't be doing any performace driving for, atleast, another 600mi.

When I drove my friend's Z, I reset the meter. All I really did was accelerate briskly, shifting at around 3000rpms and just cruise at a constant speed in 6th around or above the speed limit. If I saw something in front of me, I'd start coasting. Averaged 20-21mpg easy, for about an hour on city streets. My friend, however, dropped it to about 16-17.

I reset my guage every 1000 miles or so and it consistently reads 25.5ish; mainly highway driving.

After reading a few pages of this though, baily bill has got this topic covered I believe...

I highly doubt anyone here is driving their tank from topped off to empty; ever. Probably more like from 19 gallons down to 3-4, meaning your calculation would be quite a bit off...

FWIW I've driven about 80ish miles after the orange warning light has come on telling me I have 50ish miles to go, so there is definitely some "reserve fuel" left after the guage reads "--- DTE". I drove literally 25+ miles after "---" registered (no, not by choice)...
