I brought my z in 3 times and it still wasn't fixed. Yesterday I ran out of gas with 1/3 tank and 133 miles to empty. Tony Nissan heard it from me and so did corporate. They are working it now.

I just did it. It went up to 3/4 when I drove 120 miles already on a full tank and then few days dropped to half.

I'm a little paranoid now, I lost 1 of the 8 screws. The gas fumes stink for a bit, hopefully I won't be the human torch.

1 gripe is that the start of the car requires a little gas now or the car will die, hopefully that will go away. Fuel pump hose probably an air bubble in it.

I'm just happy I don't have to hit the reset button just to get rid of the (----) every time the car starts.

This is really worth it.

How do you guys manually calculate your MPG after a refill at the gas station?

Default q-tip fix woks

I did the driver side the first time, it didn't work.
One week later, I did passenger side, the meter works fine now.

When I use q-tip to clean the contact, it didn't look dirty at all on both units.
But it works, worth trying.

This is a great thread and great web site.
Cheer.

PS, to charlie_rdstr_Z, I lost a screw when I worked on passenger side, it seemed drop inside the car in the tight area
but, it turned out, it dropped under the car. The space is open to outside, so you may want to search where you
did the work (your garage?).

Just a note, if you disconnect the battery, you need to perform the idle relearn as per the service manual.

i simply divide the miles driven on each tank by the number of gallons i pump. average all tanks by dividing total miles driven by total gallons pumped. for example: 250 miles driven divided by 10 gallons = 25 mpg.
may not be 100% accurate, but works good enough

I've been having this problem as well. I fill up my tank (10 gallons) which is roughly about 45.00. I've been reading that you guys say you can fill up to 15 gallons or more? How so, is my tank special? Haha, anyways, whenever i fill up my tanks, my gauge reads empty all the time, moves every so often, and i get about 250 miles on every fill.

250 miles? I get about 420+ miles to a full tank. Your Z must be sick...

250 miles on 10 gallons of fuel isn't too shabby. I don't have any issues filling up the tank but, so far I've been in the 16-19 mpg range depending on how much right foot I use. I do mostly city with about 2 miles of highway into town.

I misread what you said... 250/10 gal is not bad. My Z gets to a 1/4 tank and goes stupid. Thinks it has no gas...

ME to my friend. I just bought my Z today and I have been test driving it a few times and today when I happen to buy it the gas gauge went down and I had just filled up $30 worth and it rep ads E and then goes back up but yet to seen anything say past 88. There is an extended warranty im thinking of going to the dealer tomorrow and having them look over everything as well as fix that if even i should do that? but assuming that smart either way

I'm wondering if it's anything to do with the ethanol in the fuel, it does tend to start gumming things up when the fuel sits or doesn't move around.

My thoughts are that fuel is on the sensors until it drains down, then it only gets the remnants left, which then gums/varnishes up a little each time.

Today I was filling up and my tank was just above empty, right before the light came on. It only took $37 worth of fuel before the gas was literally pouring out of the tank down the side of my car. Normally it takes ~$70 to fill up. When I got in the car the gas gauge was only at half full and my DTE was at 350km which for me is what I've seen as normal for half a tank.

Is it possible that my gauge is just so far off that the tank is actually full, or is there something way worse going on with my gas tank? I was able to feed a small piece of wire down into the tank without feeling any blockages. I also never really noticed if there was a small metal 'door' where you put the nozzle of the gas pump into like there is on some other cars. I can almost see right down into the tank. I'm nervous to go put more gas into it right now.

I think you'll find it's full, try the cleaning suggested.

I went 340 miles before my DTE went to "---" and it was all freeway driving. I filled it up with 15 gallons. I don't think I've put any more then 15 in it. Cleaning the sending units is just a part time solution. Replace the units.

I'm on my 3rd set of fuel sending units and this is getting ridiculous. I can never manage to fill it past 15 gallons. I went as far as replacing the flapper valve in the tank which was a pain in the *** and it didn't even fix the problem. I actually ran out of gas going up a mountain but when I filled it up it only took 18 gallons. Not sure if 2 gallons just sat at the rear of the tank or what. Just annoyed because I replaced my sending units in november and it worked great until yesterday when the problems came back again. I think i may just start cleaning them because replacing them hasnt helped except to make my wallet lighter.

Yeah, it's not faulty units guys, the problem's the gunk on the contacts.

Read this version of the cleaning guide from England, it actually shows how to confirm the individual contacts are clean enough.

Fuel is cleaner in the UK, but the problem still happens from time to time.
