I actually spoke to an underwriter on this issue and after getting laughed at she said it is covered. she also mentioned because it is a stupid claim they might just flat cancel the policy based on the policy holder being an "undesirable risk" , the insurance term for someone who is not using insurance for its purpose. hope this helps, ryan

Like Danisr, I too called an underwriter to confirm see what would be done on the policy. As I posted, the claim would be non-chargeable, but depending on the amount of claims made, they may choose to non-renew the policy.

Remember, your insurance policy is not designed or rated for you to use it for "maintenance." If it looks like you are, or there is a history of your car being always damaged while it was parked and unoccupied, you start to appear questionable to the underwriters. That is why I would discuss this "hypothetical" situation with your specific agent.

However, you can now see that an interested agent can get the answer if he/she wants to, and fairly quickly.

Do you want a bunch of message board guesses, or do you want a real answer?

Call your insurance agent.

You are aware a deductible isn't payed to the insurance company, correct?

Taken out of context, you did see it before. And in short, your answer was correct. However, the rest of the posting gave him other information that he should find helpful and valuable. .

You see, understanding the reasons for the answer given is just as important as the answer itself. Not only does it educate him, and those who read it, but it also gives a glimpse of how to approach this matter. Because this is a question that could involve getting him cancelled, non-renewed or expose him to something he can't back out of, he needed all that information so he can approach his agent in a way that won't hurt his situation, yet still gives him the ability to ask questions and get answers without it effecting him directly.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime. Perhaps that simplifies my motives.

Yes, I understand that. Usually the insurance company cuts you (and or the body shop; usually on a dual check) a check, less the deductible amount. Hence, you end up paying the "deductible" amount to the body shop.

What I meant by my facetious little example was that if they "charged" a "deductible" (really they don't "charge" a deductible at all) for every seperate chip on the bumper, he would end up cutting them a check... Not a realistic example at all; just sarcastic and facetious as mentioned to exhibit the same kind of idiotic thinking of the OP.
