I have raced a couple of newer models and everything stock for stock pre 07 has been a drivers race. Now the 2007 on the other hand, is hands down faster by far stock for stock. I have the jump off the line with my buddys 07 gt, but by third he is a car length ahead and then the pulling continues. I love my 03 for its stiff race inspired feel of just pure performance, however its always good to have that refinement in the 2007. I do believe purchasing a 2007 was a bad choice for my buddy when we have seen the potential of the 3.7, which is only a year away.
Driving the two cars I fell a big difference in clutch engagement, the 07 is smooth and high as opposed to my 03 which is stiff and low. The sound deadening is definantly caked on beacuse road noise is to a minimal in the 2007. The suspension feels more giving in the 2007 as well . The handling would be a different experience in a lower model because of the massive 19x10 in the rear of the gt model, which take some effort to slide around.

Just get a tune up to rule out anything mechanical or worn out. If it still seems sluggish, might be time to get an 07/08 so you can blow your sons doors off. I don't thing we'll see the 3.7/330hp till 09.

I've never gotten a chance to ride in any other model/year as mine, but I have to say the way you described your post that started this thread was like words out of my mouth. Very smooth in the acceleration, limited outside noise, shifting was so easy, and the clutch engages very well.
I don't drive my Z that much, but I can tell immediately feel the difference on the way the car as a whole performs against other cars like an S2000, S14 240, Integra, Civic, Evo, Sti, etc.
