Damn this is crazy.
What the hell is the big deal with babying the F'in syncros?
Are they made out of solid gold?
Are they only available in limited quantities?
Do you have to travel to a dangerous foreign country to find them?
So they last longer? Last longer than what? The rest of the tranny's components?
Do you win some sort of special award for getting the most mileage on the original syncros?
I mean c'mon.
I have owned several MT's with high mileage and have never had any issues with my syncros. Never. And I never double clutch. Ever.
I don't buy cars to baby them, I buy them to drive them and enjoy them.
Do you use you brakes less to extend their life?
Do you drive in the dark to extend the life of your headlights?
Do you never open your hood in fear of wearing out the hood latches?
STFU already, drive the **** out of your Z. IF something breaks, fix it and drive the **** out of it some more.
Damn man, give it up already.
I have a jug full of pennies I will send you if you are that hard up for cash.
And your ignorance has nothing to do with your post count. I imagine you will have several posts one day and still remain completely clueless.
And the saddest part is, there is no proof whatsoever that double clutching will even extend the life of the syncros.
Sad, sad, sad.

1. Press in the clutch
2. Select neutral
3. Release the clutch
4. Blip the throttle
5. Press in the clutch
6. Select the gear
7. Release the clutch
You can do this within a fraction of a second with some practice. I taught my girlfriend to do this over a year ago and its made her downshifting much smoother.
Your way is better than his because its smoother, however you're still causing your syncros to do some work. If you do your method while braking, its not as bad (many road racers will do this because its the fastest way to slow down). Of course true road racers only care about their tranny lasting for the race they're currently in.

Here's more reading for you http://www.triumphspitfire.com/healtoe.html
Proper heel-toe technique includes double clutching.
The reason you believe you think your fine by just doing a simple rev match is due to the fact that your synchros are making up for the slower input shaft speed for you. (as they are designed to).
I've yet to see anyone else post a source showing that simple revmatching downshifting will not cause wear on the synchros.
Like I said before, most of you won't see the bad effects of non-double clutching downshifts in your time of ownership. Just like most of you will not have to replace the original clutch (if you're stock). So you don't really have to worry about it. I was just correcting the OP because both he and his friend are wrong.

Again. bs. I gave my gf my old winter beater I've had for 16 years. It has 200,000 km's from my non-double clutching *** with no syncro replacement.

Part of the problem with Spoolin Z's remarks is what he is basing them on: an early vr4, which has one of the weakest trannies ever put in a sports car. A car will not wear through synchro in 75k miles unless something is wrong. I regularly see 300zx's with 200-300k miles that are in good shape, and when the tranny has been taken apart on the last few, synchro wear was normal for the mileage. Also, these cars were beat on, downshifted often, and NEVER double clutched.
Have fun with your car and don't worry. Downshifting is fun, but double clutching is not.

what are you guys talking about double clutching ? I only use my clutch when pulling off or going into reverse.you dont need a clutch in any gear down shifting or up shifting if you rev match perfect . imo
