The fastest time I've seen posted is the 5.3 (Track). Base and Touring models are probably closer to 5.6 - 5.8 (but as one poster said, why trust the mags?).
Mid-5's is pretty good (considering an 645Ci pulls a 5.3, too), but maybe not-so-good when you consider that a 2005 Mustang can pull a 5.0-5.1, and the GTO, WRX STi, Evo, E46 M3 all have sub-5 times.
But in the end, the Z is just one damn beautiful machine, and no stopwatch can measure THAT!

Whether 5.5 or 5.4 I'm not dissatisfied. I'll wait patiently for my Nismo parts which I'm sure will get me under 5 to the high 4s with supercharger, exhaust, ecu, and whatever else.

I am a little disappointed, but with NISMO there is still hope for a 5.0 and 13.5

Nismo parts will not get you from 5.4 sec to 5 sec 0-60. You'll need about another 80-100hp to do that.
The Z can do 5.2. Considering the ECU has some sort of restriction below 5k miles (heard from numerous people), thats damn good. you have to launch in a smart way, no more than 4k rpm, maybe 3.5, get your traction immediately and blast off. the wrx is freakin slow after its "quick jump." from a roll, the Z will handle the all wheel drive EVOs and STIs (aka the econoboxes) with hideous spoilers larger than the freakin rear end itself. M3 has less torque stock and is heavier, way overrated. and you knwo american cars, they seem to have trouble getting their HP to the wheels. and of course their suspension is a joke. ALL THIS with the Zs strength being on a track, not straight away. i can dig up at least 2 sources that have the Z dominating at the track... over m3, s2k, porsche, etc.
And dont get me started with POTENTIAL vs. those other cars. and the Z looks damn better, just ask any tramp at school or walking the street. its a biatch magnet

The numbers look good to me.

Unless you're going off of the tuner magazines, the regular joe car magazines are listing only the stock times.
Either way, like you said, it's not like I really go by their info anyway.
the september 2004 issue of sport compact car magazine put the 350Z in as one of its "8 greatest rides under $30,000" it tested the touring and the 0-60 was 5.9 and the 1/4 was 14.1 @ 99.1 mph.
other cars included in the 8 great rides under $30,000
Dodge SRT-4 0-60=5.9 1/4=14.1@102.1mph
Mini Cooper S 0-60=7.1 1/4=15.2@92.4mph
Mazda RX-8 0-60=6.8 1/4=14.9@93.1mph
Mazda Speed MX5 Miata 0-60=6.9 1/4=15.1@90.1mph
Acura RSX Type-S 0-60=7.2 1/4=15.3@93.1mph
Mistsu Lancer Evo 8 RS 0-60=4.8 1/4=13.3@101.3mph
Subaru WRX 0-60=5.2 1/4=14.6@91.8mph
I would rather have the Z then any of the other cars. I'm happy
