Torn over my Z order and another toy
I'm really torn at the moment... I ordered my Z in mid-January, so it'll be one of the first ones in this area. However, I'm truly frightened that the dealship is going to charge me $3K over MSRP, despite our verbal agreement. If that's the case, I refuse to buy the car solely on principle, as I can't afford a $40K price tag.
Another temptation is this 944 Turbo I've come across. Entire front end is carbon-fiber, motor was rebuilt last summer, roll cage, Recaro seats, K27 turbo, adjustable 30mm sway bays, 928 brakes, blah blah blah. In essence, it's a true sports car, equipped for the track, all for $10K. Hmmm... what to do, what to do....

First big mistake - you didn't get the no charge over MSRP in writing.
No the Z will not match a car that has been setup for track... hello?? If you are planning to race you may save a dime and go with the 944. It sounds like a nicely moded vehicle. If you are looking for a daily driver - I'd go with the Z... newer, better, safer, by all those standards much more comfie.
Z = new car
944 = old car
Z = daily driver
944 = track car

Your very trusting to have a verbal agreement only. I and most of the folks that have discussed it have their final price in writing signed by the sales manager. You may want to go back to them and try to get it in writing.
As far as the choice of cars, they are so different that it seems that you need to make a choice of what you want the car for rather that which car you want.
Your description of the 944 makes it sound like a street legal race car. I can only assume that is has the ride of one as well. The Z will have a much more refined and comfortable ride. If you want a daily driver, this could get old pretty quick (I know, I had a miata with a competition suspension that I used as a daily driver for a while).
If you want a weekend racer, I would go for the 944. With the extra $25K you could buy a lot of race tires and go fast parts for it. With that kind of money, it would be able to out race a stock Z eaisly.
If you want reliable transportation, the Z is going to be a lot better in this area (its new and will have a warrentee). It will offer performance that will be equivilant to the 944 (barring major upgrades) with the security of not having to worry about getting where you want to go.

Can you go back now and get this in writing... before your Z arrives?
Good luck,
Todd
I was told by somebody that in Virginia the contract must be written within 30 or 90 days of the sale... however, I can't verify this, as this is a big gray area.
I think I'm going to drive out to the dealership this evening and speak with the sales manager.

that just brought up this thought. Is there anything in the law that states how long a car sales contract is good for.....most of us would have held the contract for over 6 months before the contract is executed.....then again, since we put down a deposit we have already executed the contract...... ummmmm....just thinking out loud. ...any lawyers out there.
