When I give my car some hell I always have this funny smell. First I thought that it’s just me going crazy but after reading one of the threads here I came to the conclusion that I am not the only one.

So do any of you have this smell while redlining and if so what do you thing it really is?

Avoid redlining. Avoid the smell?
You drastically lose power in the redline, so why not just avoid it?

Neither. And believe me I know how both smell :-)

 

Is that a fact that you loose power at redline? I mean you start the next gear higher up the curve.

Besides the smell is not connected directly to heating a redline, its more connected to going WOT

 

With the rev-up engine you have ? Have you looked at the power curve on that engine? HP loss is minimal passed peak hp.

To the OP, when you redline your car, you're generating a lot more heat. You might simply be smelling mud deposits cooking on the headers.

Smelling "new" stuff is normal when you push the car. Tires, clutch, fluids, brakes...

Just enjoy the ride and go!

is your car new? I remember I used to get a funky (not too bad) smell after hard driving... but that went away. and now I have test pipes anyway

probably some kind of coating...

My friends that have ridden with me before when I've driven the Z hard say that they can smell a smell that's like a catalytic converter going bad. That egg like smell. Anyone else experience this?

lol well despite all the hilarious answers everyone has given i have experienced this with other cars.

WOT causes a rotten egg like smell from the exhaust.

Im going out on a limb here and guessing it has something to do with the catalytic convertors. simple solution is to get resonated tp's and not worry about it. better flowing exhaust, slight horsepower gain, and no more "funny" smell.



other than that, its nothing to worry about. your engine would have to be running really rich (like dumping gas) to nuke a cat.

 

Actually, tht's a sign that the converter is working just fine. Its converting unburned HCs to hydrogen sulfide.

Modern EFI engines are programmed to run rich at WOT. That means more unburned HCs are dumped out the exhaust valve, and momentarily increases the "load" on the cat.
