Default Question about insurance

Well, about the 2nd week I've had my car, I was at the local college taking my ACT's. After I'm done I go to a friend's grad party and his mom comes to me and says "I see someone's already keyed your car".
So the key mark is pretty deep, not buffable, and the entire length of the door...
My question is, do you guys think there's some way I could convince the insurance company to just repaint the entire car to keep it's "paint integrity"? To avoid a color mismatched door?

Another question. Anyone know good reputable body shops up in Northern Minnesota?

The insurance is obligated to return the car to pre-incident condition. Whatever technique is required, that is the technique that will be used.

For shop recommendations check your regional forum.

Most likely the insurance company will pay to blend to adjascent panels. They will not give you a whole new paint job.

Yeh you are right. The Insurance company needs to make the car as it was pre-incident. Will they let you repaint the whole car? F*ck no. Why should they pay 1k to paint the whole car when they could fix the scratch for 500 (hypothetical numbers)?

I dont think you've ever been in this situation before so I'll tell you what is going to happen. You are going to make a claim, pay the deductible, and wait for the adjustor to check out your car. He is NOT going allow you to paint your whole car (that is called insurance fraud). You will get a quote from a body shop and they will fix the scratch. Hope that helps.

todays paint matching technology is way ahead of what we had years ago.

Sorry to hear someone did that to your car. I have been the victim of this kind of crime before (luckily it was on a POS) and it sucks badily.

If you go to a decent shop you won't be able to tell it has been repainted.

But for all the young kids that keep asking about buying a 30k car and driving it to college this is what happens more times than not.

Its usually not worth the $500 deductible unless you have scratches on more than one panel.

Id suggest just getting a bottle of touch up paint from nissan and do your best to cover it up so it doesn't rust.

Deductible varies from policy to policy. I pay a 1k deductible + close to nothing on my premiums. Yeh...my rule of thumb is: if the damage costs less than double the ded, then dont file a claim.

Any well qualified shop will be able to match the repaired panel to the adjacent panels perfectly.

True, but for the most part they're $500 if you go for a "standard" deductible...

I chose $300 comprehensive and $500 collision for 2 reasons:

1. The difference in premium between a $300 comp and $500 comp was like $50

2. I drive a car that many people envy and tend to want to vandilize and I wanted the lowest out of pocket expense I could afford in my premium

Anyway, I wouldn't bother going through insurance, you'll end up having it on record. Insurance companies like to look at your loss ratio to insure that they're making a profit from you. They look at the amount they've made from you in premium vs the amount they've paid out for losses (even if you're not at fault).

talk to your agent or whatever you have, an adjuster can give you a quote for free - wont cost you a dime until you turn it in... ya never know, the adjuster may quote it out more than your deductible in which case you could get the job done right.
