You got to pay to play if you dont have any automotive clue on how to do that stuff yourself or the resources. I would check with a smaller automotive shop to get this work done it should save you a couple bucks for the dollar menu. Remeber the dealerships arent the only capable mechanics to service your car. There should be plenty of reputable shops in your area that do awesome work.

Being A Service Manager For Honda, I See Everyday People Fighting To Do Major Services. Honda's Warranty Is 3/36 And I Am More Inclined To Do "goodwill Warranty" Repairs On Cust Cars That Spend Money As Opposed To Cheap ****s That Come In For Our Oil Change Special. I Know I Am Not The Only Service Manager That Feels This Way Either!

30K mile interval maintenence is a useless service that made for customers that does not know much about cars and looking for 'peace of mind' basically. I mean c'mon.. we all have eyes to check brake lights and inspect fluid level, right?
Also, would you pay $400 to let someone 'Road test' your car? No. They gotta pay me to do that.

Most of the stuff is nothing but inspecting things that anybody here can do.
You can figure what an oil, oil filter, coolant, air filter change cost. The rest is a fee for an inspection, not fixing.

You can't rotate tires on a Z, specialty fluids are extra, and guess which model they will charge the extra for.
You're the only one that knows what your time and the hassle is worth. I wouldn't put it off though.

There is a cheaper version...at least at the dealer service dept I took my Z to. Think I paid a couple hundred bucks for 30 K service. Wasted $$$? Maybe but I'm not a mechanical guy & worth it for piece of mind. Plus I trust the service guys.

Maintenance costs for the Z have been minimal....don't think I've spent over $500 in 4 + years including the 30 K service.

half of those you can do yourself.. oil change? rotate tires? lubricate hinges? check if lights work? i would probably pay for them to check my fluid levels though.

The mythical search button revealed a Moderator reply. Thanks to Wired 24/7

My problem with taking it to the dealer is all they ever do is "check" stuff, and charge you big bucks for it.

If they actually have to REPLACE Something after CHECKING it, then all of a sudden it costs a sh1tload for very minor stuff.

Look at the "30k mile service" at your local dealer.

Santa Monica Nissan's 30k mile service includes:

* Oil Change + filter ($15 if you DIY)
* "Service battery" Not sure what this means
* Lubricate doors and hinges ($ 5 DIY)
* Inspect front brake wear
* Inspect and fill fluid levels; master cyl, differential, power steering, transmission, and cooling system
* Inspect all lights OMG wow!!
* Inspect all hoses
* Inspect seatbelt
* Replace manual transmission fluid (OK here's the first valuable thing they claim they will do. It cost me 31.80 plus about $7 shipping to DIY)
* Brake system service; inspect brake lining, master cylinders, hydraulic line, adjust parking brake (all BS no work actually done, you usually have to request for them to tighten your parking brake)
* Cooling system service; inspect all hoses (again ), flush system and pressure test for leaks. This is probably even easier than an oil change and cost you $20 at most.
* Adjust tire pressure... totally free at a gas station, $0.25 if they're REALLY sticking it to ya.
* Inspect suspension
* Tune engine (complete bullsh1t, they cannot tune ****. at most you are getting an ECU reset, which you can do by disconnecting your battery, for free.)
* Check Idle (who cares, unless you are stalling at every stop)
* Inspect and test PCV valve no comment on this one
* Replace air filter ($7)
* Replace fuel filter (LIES, they cannot even replace it)
* Rotate tires and inspect tire wear (more lies)
* Adjust clutch freeplay. Do you have too much clutch freeplay? I don't.
* Road test and quality check (I'd rather they don't take my car around the block for a spirited drive, but that's just me.)

Total DIY: $115 ***INCLUDING differential oil changed, which is not covered in the "major 30k mile service"***

The $115 includes
$15 oil change
$5 grease
$68.60 manual trans oil, diff oil, fluid transfer pump, and shipping costs from summit racing
$20 coolant change
$7 air filter

Plus I used redline synthetic manual trans oil and differential gear oil. So far the results are much better than the stock oil whatever nissan fills at the factory.

Total from dealer: $299.25. and just go ahead and ask them how much replacing the diff oil is. I'll bet you it costs at least $65-70 extra.

My mechanic used to work for a Nissan dealership. He said that he and the other mechanics laughed at the people who paid for the 30k maintenance tune-ups (usually, it's the ignorant soccer moms or clueless yuppies who paid for that service he told me).

As long as you follow what is in the maintenance schedule and have a written maintenance record for what was done (save receipts too if you can), you should be fine. $500 for a tune-up is a "please sir, use the lube" situation.

if you are clued whatso ever on cars, you will likely do that stuff in incraments and more often anyway.
having the dealer do it is a rip off. They just take your $425 to change the oil and filter and look at your tires

I am an automotive technician so heres my break down on this for you
- Engine oil and filter change (just buy an oil change)
- Inspect fluid levels, inspect tire wear and set tire pressure (use your eyes)
- Check operation of all lights and controls (duh)
- Tire rotation (go ahead and rotate the tires on your Z )
- Lubricate all hinges, locks, and latches (no one actually does it anyway)
- Inspect, clean and adjust front and rear brakes (you cant adjust disc brakes)
- Inspect suspension components, tie rod ends, steering gear box and drive shaft boots (unless its a GM FWD vehicle these parts are fine at 30K)
- Replace air filter (ok, unless you have a popcharger )
- Check and adjust parking brake (you will no if it isn't working)
- Inspect brake hoses and lines, exhaust system, fuel lines and the underbody (30K it is fine)
- Inspect cooling system hoses/connections & coolant condition(not necessary
- Drain and replace cooling system fluids (ok for preventive maint.)
- Inspect and adjust drive belts (look at them yourself, cracks are bad)
- Change transmission fluid(synth fluid extra) (good idea on a Z )
- Perform multipoint inspection and battery test (joke)
- Road test vehicle (some gets to drive the P!ss out of your Z)
- Battery service (batteries today are maintenence free)
- Platinum plugs extra (Nope)
- Synthetic & specialty fluids extra
- Some models extra.

SO most of it is garbage, but it makes me more money when people want to do it. Your better off to tell them to change your oil, coolant and trans fluid... save you some money i'll bet

Thank you.

It's not brain surgery, and 75% of that stuff is simply useless.
I have no intention on bringing my Z in for this service.
Also, considering the attitudes most Z owners display, I'd say most of the Z's out there are in excellent shape and need very little by 30k, even 60k.
