"Grumpier Old Men" ...maybe

"Wiser Old Men" ...certainly

Nothing beats experience, and that comes with age.

Don't be grumpy honey...brickyard is the first color Z I road tested. It sold me. In the end I bought a superblack 35th. I fell in love.

That list is so whacked! You don't have to do this in one day but as you go you can check this n that, etc...

- Engine oil and filter change
If you can't do this stop and pay the man! Otherwise go here
- Inspect fluid levels, inspect tire wear and set tire pressure
Open your hood, look at all the fluid levels in the see thru white containers. If you have to add to them, it tells you what to add on the cap.
As for tires, you should have even wear across the tire, it's not like you can rotate them and if you have uneven wear get an alignment
- Check operation of all lights and controls
Hmmm, let see turn on all the lights, try the blinkers, set something on the brake peddle, yep they work!
- Tire rotation
Uhh..., good luck with that one!
- Lubricate all hinges, locks, and latches
Get some silicone lubricant spray with a focused spay adapter and lube them up!
- Inspect, clean and adjust front and rear brakes
Get on your knees, look between your wheels at your brakes, if your pads are thinner than a dime or make a high pitch squeel noise when stopping then replace them DIY here
- Inspect suspension components, tie rod ends, steering gear box and drive shaft boots
Basically if you don't have weird tire wear, or your steering wheel is drastically offset from center you should be ok. When you get an alignment they'll notice these things as well!
- Replace air filter
If it looks dirty get another, Cost about $7.00
- Check and adjust parking brake
I guess stop on an incline away from any objects, pull the ebrake leaving it in neutral and let off the brake peddle. If it needs adjustment then DIY here
- Inspect brake hoses and lines, exhaust system, fuel lines and the underbody
Next time you have your car on a lift ask them to check this stuff out. Basically if you haven't run over anything previously you should be fine.
- Inspect cooling system hoses/connections & coolant condition
This was done above under fluid levels. Add some coolant if it's low
- Drain and replace cooling system fluids
If you must DIY here
- Inspect and adjust drive belts
You have two belts, basically make sure they are not cracked or frayed.
- Change transmission fluid(synth fluid extra)
You're good until 100k but if you must DIY here
- Perform multipoint inspection and battery test
I call this the money shot! Walk around your car a few times, get in and start it [multipoint inspection ]. Look over at your gauge on the far right, it should be > 12 when the engine in running. As far as an actual battery test, see Battery Service below
- Road test vehicle
DIY here
- Battery service
It's called AutoZone! Play dumb, they'll test your battery and if need be take out and replace your battery for free.
- Platinum plugs extra
They're good until 105k but if you must read the manuals here
- Synthetic & specialty fluids extra
You have no need for this if you are reading this!

"Hey! RU single?"

All such comments...even if in jest... are appreciated as I approach my 65th B-Day. LOL!

But, no, I've been married to one hot number for last 32 years.

She's like like fine wine - looks to me like she got better with age. Wish mine was still around - she was called "upstairs" a few years ago. Dating at 60+ isn't as easy as you would think.

I am coming up on 29k right now but see no reason to pay $400+ for the dealership to check lights. One even says to "check horn". Honestly? So, at some point in the shop they honk the horn? I bet that's fun. They are also charging your to take your car for a quick spin (road test). That's not going to happen with my 19"s.

Money better spent is to tell them to change oil, coolant, and trans fluid. I have made a tradition of changing the trans fluid every 5k miles or so. Excessive? Maybe, but I have also never had a grind in 3rd either.

You two are so lucky. I am happy for you both. Your wife is sooo very lovely!

huggs,

Here is the present love of my life, and pix of me en route, and after arriving at my destination. I am 61 years young, and hopefully getting younger...This age would be very uplifting, if it wasn't for my body falling.

We've been married for over 40 years. Here are pictures of my lovely wife, the first taken 41 years ago when we first met and the second recently on my 70th birthday. Pardon the scratches on the first one. It is my favorite and has been in my wallet since it was taken.

My problem with taking it to the dealer is all they ever do is "check" stuff, and charge you big bucks for it.

If they actually have to REPLACE Something after CHECKING it, then all of a sudden it costs a sh1tload for very minor stuff.

Look at the "30k mile service" at your local dealer.

Santa Monica Nissan's 30k mile service includes:

* Oil Change + filter ($15 if you DIY)
* "Service battery" Not sure what this means
* Lubricate doors and hinges ($ 5 DIY)
* Inspect front brake wear
* Inspect and fill fluid levels; master cyl, differential, power steering, transmission, and cooling system
* Inspect all lights OMG wow!!
* Inspect all hoses
* Inspect seatbelt
* Replace manual transmission fluid (OK here's the first valuable thing they claim they will do. It cost me 31.80 plus about $7 shipping to DIY)
* Brake system service; inspect brake lining, master cylinders, hydraulic line, adjust parking brake (all BS no work actually done, you usually have to request for them to tighten your parking brake)
* Cooling system service; inspect all hoses (again ), flush system and pressure test for leaks. This is probably even easier than an oil change and cost you $20 at most.
* Adjust tire pressure... totally free at a gas station, $0.25 if they're REALLY sticking it to ya.
* Inspect suspension
* Tune engine (complete bullsh1t, they cannot tune ****. at most you are getting an ECU reset, which you can do by disconnecting your battery, for free.)
* Check Idle (who cares, unless you are stalling at every stop)
* Inspect and test PCV valve no comment on this one
* Replace air filter ($7)
* Replace fuel filter (LIES, they cannot even replace it)
* Rotate tires and inspect tire wear (more lies)
* Adjust clutch freeplay. Do you have too much clutch freeplay? I don't.
* Road test and quality check (I'd rather they don't take my car around the block for a spirited drive, but that's just me.)

Total DIY: $115 ***INCLUDING differential oil changed, which is not covered in the "major 30k mile service"***

The $115 includes
$15 oil change
$5 grease
$68.60 manual trans oil, diff oil, fluid transfer pump, and shipping costs from summit racing
$20 coolant change
$7 air filter

Plus I used redline synthetic manual trans oil and differential gear oil. So far the results are much better than the stock oil whatever nissan fills at the factory.

Total from dealer: $299.25. and just go ahead and ask them how much replacing the diff oil is. I'll bet you it costs at least $65-70 extra.

Are you saying that there is no fuel filter? I am the 2nd person who questioned this in this thread. There has to be some sort of fuel filter or strainer that has to be cleaned, right?

My guess is "goodwill warranty " means giving the customer the benefit of the doubt in close call cases.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trains1937, it appears we have both done well in the girl department! LOL!
Sharon & I had the benefit of meeting after we had dated a combined 100 people or so and knew when we saw a good thing in 1970! As an aside, you can take the 1966 photo to a custom shop and they can make it look new; cost you around 50 bucks.

KenZee, condolances on losing your wife; don't know what I would do. I've grown real fond of my girl over the years.

I couldn't agree more.

The "then" and "now" pictures you and Trains1937 posted are just great. You are two very fortunate guys (having such attractive and wonderful gals for so long a time).

I'm at 32 years married as well, and the relationship grows stronger with every year.

32 years vs. 30K miles makes this thread seem a little trivial.
