First, you have a RWD car with minimal computer assistance in terms of traction. You don't drive 60+ when the roads are wet from freshly fallen rain.

Second, having two different types of tires between front and back is never a good idea.

Third, you have uneven tire wear in the rear and did nothing about it? Even on my FWD Maxima, when I noticed one of my tires wore uneven, I threw it out and bought a new one.

You're lucky to be alive, friend. But at the same time, this accident was your own fault. Order a matching set of tires, and take it easy on wet roads. Even I keep my speed around 45MPH, and my tires are practically brand new with 9/32.

Arnold K. has some good points there. Consider this experience a lesson to be learned. I always say education is expensive and looks to me that you just got off very easy with no damage to yourself and the car. I don't want to be a douch, just wanted to mention that. Thankfully, you're OK and hopefully you'll be more careful in the future.

As a side note, I always wondered how well TCS and VSC work and maybe conditions like this make the weakness of those systems come out. As I see it, they react to some conditions and GUESS what should happen next and they do it. If you guess, you'll guess wrong and things can get hairy. Human brain > TCS & VSC. I much rather have the control and not rely on a machine to do the work for me. This is my case though. Those systems are in place because many drivers need them so that they don't kill themselves while driving a car like the Z.

Again, thank god you're fine. Learn from this and drive safely.

I live in SW Florida, where we get a lot of rain. I drive a company vehicle about 150 miles/day and would not recommend doing 45mph on any of our highways. If you can't drive with the flow of traffic, pull off the road and wait for conditions to improve. The bottleneck that happens behind slow cars on the highway is very dangerous, as people stuck behind the slow car try to get into the next lane that is pouring by 25mph faster than the slow car they are stuck behind.

Well that's where you're wrong. First off, our speed limit is 50, anyways. And when it rains heavily, almost everyone slows down to the limit or just below it. So believe me, I'm not inconveniencing anyone.

It's because only one side of the car looses traction while the other doesn't, and is still pulling/pushing the car along. It's the equivilent a jet with two engines, one on each wing, and one going out, but less severe... The plane will just spin in a circle.

Yeah well the speed limits here are 60-65. I was barely keeping up with the flow of traffic. And as for the front tires being different than the back? It was a necessity at the time, both front tires were just completely eaten away at by the tire feathering. And one of them went flat and I wasnt about to get one new tire in the front. Its only been a month, just waiting for this weeks check and I will be able to get new rear tires as well.

But as I have stated before, I drove in the rain with the rear stock potenzas nearly bald and NEVER had anything close to this problem. Well needless to say Im more saftey oriented now.

(BTW if you go 45 mph on 6-10 the rain will be the least of your problems. If a cop doesnt get you, Im sure an 18 wheeler goin 70-75 will)

I wasnt, just that TCS locks them up whenever I do lil mini slides. I just think they locked up because thats usually what happens when my Z goes sideways in wet weather.

Oh ok. The ABS should prevent it from locking up, but weirder things have happened.

I can count at least 3 or 4 times were they have locked up and Ive just slid...although those times I was just messing around in a wet parking lot. Nothing compared to the freaking freeway

Traction control normally cuts power when it detects slippage. Braking would only be necessary in extreme cases. Can you imagine what your car would do if the brakes locked up due to a little chirp out of the rear wheels on a hard shift from 1st to 2nd?

It has been raining for about a month and a half now! Nearly non-stop! Ive washed my Z a total of 3 times, and it rained either that same day, or the day after so it really sucks. Today looks pretty and sunny, but Texas weather changes ina heartbeat. Wouldnt be surprised if it started snowing....
