The 00+ GTS had more misshifts than the regular GT due to its 6 speed tranny and having really close gate gears. A lot of owners usually put 3rd back into 2nd.

The z isn't really bad. Like you said, most likey driver error. Just make sure you put the clutch all the way in before you shift.

I've never really mis-shifted in any car, including the Z.

I think the secret is to use a different hand position for each "line" of gears.

For example, I hold the shifter like a walking stick (with thumb and all my fingers) for 1st and 2nd, because the hand will naturally try to pull to the left when you hold it like that. I palm the gears for 3rd and 4th, like most people say you should for all the gears. For 5th and 6th I'll do a palm that is slightly angled away from me, almost like a pushing action. It's worked for me 100% of the time.

The only time I have mis-shifted really hard is when I talk on the cell phone or am messing with the stereo, or generally just not paying attention to the car. Often times I will catch myself and just go into neutral for a second, blip and match to catch back up.

The Z has been such a change from any of the cars I've ever driven but I've never missed a gear before

Exactly...I used to have an 87 Fiero GT which seemed to only have the thickness of a sheet of paper between gears left to right...I have always used a similar sort of technique to what is described above and it shifted fine for me...had a few friends try to go 1-2-1 instead of 1-2-3 in it though...

Cars don't miss-shift; drivers do.

yes i know people miss shift not cars, but just wondering how often it was with Z owners, and how close the gates were between gears.

There is a special traction pad you can put on the shifter along with a glove you are guarenteed not to miss a shift

I also used to own a 7th Gen celica. They had bad issues with the Shift cables binding and jumping, throwing the transmission into the wrong gear. Toyota bought alot of engines due to this.
