Default 300zx vs 350z

Hi everybody,

I am considering buying a 1994 or 95 300zx and was wondering if the 350 z has a substantial difference in performance. Manual for both of course. And I could get one in VERY good condition for under 15g. Has anyone owned a 300zx and now owns a 350z? It's not like I'm on a tight budget or anything, It's just I want something a little more original than the 350z. It's an excellent car, not going to argue that, but there are so damn many of 'em.

Exactly, there are too many 350Z on the road, you should go for the 300ZX.

300zx is about equal to a 94 lambo as terms of performance. A 350z won’t touch it, even if the 350z is TT, Supercharged, and turbonatored along with a flux capacitor.

is the ZX a twin turbo model? might be similar performance, but the TT would be good for modding. i just dont know tho, buying a 12 year old car when you could get a new Z? i'd have a hard time doing that unless the ZX was mint and a half.

I had a 91 Twin Turbo and it was great. The 350Z has great looks, power, and handling. But if you end up getting the 300ZX it has to be a turbo. Also the big draw back was the gas consumption and the maintance repairs and the cost of upgrades.

I rarely see any 350's. Maybe once a week, and yet only a few 300zx's ever.

oh I almost forgot prepair your wallet when it comes down to changing the timing belt, water pump, tensionors, plugs, and fuel filters. And in the winter time beware for fuel leaks. A lot of the old Z32's have problems with fuel leaks and the engines catch fire if not taken care off.

if you were trying to scare me, it worked. I guess if it's going to be that unreliable, the 350z is worth it.

There's two hundred cars in my parking lot - three of them are Z's (mine and two '07's)

I spent a lot of money on my TT and I sold it with 102k miles. It was very fast but man all the money and trouble that was put into the car you cant get that back. Every month something would brake on the car.

Why buy a 12-13 year old used sports car? I personally wouldn't do anything like that.

I thought it was reliable like the 350z. If that's the case then I'll just get a 350z plus some minor body work. Maybe some places it's nice, but here in Los Angeles the car is played out. Not quite as played out as the G35, but played out nonetheless.

Either way you guys will be seeing more of me in the future.

Dude, they ARE reliable cars. However, when you are putting it like you are, that you can buy either and (I'm assuming) the car will be a daily driver of sorts, then you should consider that the 350 is newer and the 300, though reliable, will have issues that ANY car that is 12 years old or older, will have. Case in point, my '88 Porsche 944. It's a very reliable car that I wouldn't hesitate to drive cross country. Was it always reliable? No...I had to spend some money to get it there. That's what you will do with a 300zxTT unless you buy one that is, as someone else stated, mint and a half. There are plenty of them out there but they will approach the cost of a nice used '03-'04 350.

Me? I'd buy the 300 (a nice one) and spend a little cash on it to make sure it's in tip top shape. While I don't think the 350 is a common car by any means, I do see a lot more of them than Z32 300zx's. When I had my '91 TT, it was the only one in my area. That was nice...

I can attest...i have a 944 turbo that i've had to go through and make track reliable...the problem is i spent a small fortune on little parts here and there...fuel pump...fuel pressure regulator (killed the pump) vacuum lines, ball joints...shocks...sensors...switches...relays...bushings...h oses...no kidding...i probably dropped another 3-5k in reliability issues...you could pick up a nice 350Z for 17K...shopping around of course...and you'll have a much more modern looking car...much nicer interior...and probably around 7 year newer car...that's a lot of wear and tear

Having owned a 91zx TT, Im am of the opinion that it has one of the best interiors I have ever seen. I loved it. And still do. There is just something that the z32 has.. (for me anyway) that the z 33 dosent. Im not sure if its the rush of the turbos when they spool, the wind in over your head with the T-tops off or a combonation of the two. I would love to own another one soon. Howerver, as a few have mentioned...... Its not so friendly on gas, and it will require much more maintanance than a 350z. I wouldnt have it for my DD, I have my G for that. But it makes a great weekend car.

The 300zx came in both a normally aspirated and a turbo version. And the turbos are really pretty rare.

The N/A version isn't even in the same league with the 350, performance wise. They were about 220-230 hp, and weighed about 3200 lbs. No match for a 350.

The TT version was 300HP, but wieghed a little more, so the performance would be similar to teh 350Z.
