Another comparison! Z vs. Cayman S?
I know street racing isn't condoned here, but I raced one. It wasn't to an excessive speed, or anything - not the slightest bit. It was on a wide 5 lane boulevard here. The first Cayman I raced was the 2.7 base - I slaughtered it.
But the 3.4L S was a much more interesting race. I raced it from a dig to about 80MPH and the out come was a neck and neck race - both of us also had a great launch. The other race I purposely selected from the sweet-spot of the Z's, 2nd gear roll - 45MPH to 80MPH, which I had by a quarter bumper, which made it a tie, really.

The Cayman S as with the Boxster S has 295 hp and weighs less then the Z. With the Boxster S and the Z Roadster you are giving up 500 + lbs. That is a lot of weight to spot any car. The Porsche (987S) is not bad in acceleration but that is not its strong point. The handling ability with the mid engine is what makes it such an attractive and interesting car. The issue seems to be: Is it worth 30 grand more for the Cayman S or 25 grand more for the Boxster S ?
The Z does have greater potential for tuning. The P is about as far as you can go without high dollar mods. You can drop in the 3.6 or 3.8 Carrera engines but that is very spendy and most do not attempt it unless they need an engine replacement. The Tip, as stated, is nothing special unlike the Audi or Ferrari. Porsche is working on a double clutch auto for the next year or so. Maybe now that they are owning so much of Volks. Then, it would be faster then the manual.
For the money, the Z is about the best bang for the buck especially in Coupe form. If you want to spend another 25 or so then you have more choices.

i believe you might be confusing tiptronic with SMG(sequential manuel gearbox)
Both nice cars. Buddy here at work traded his 03 Z for a Cayman S. He said he loves the way the car handles but misses that low end torque he got with the Z. We drove around in both cars and he showed me how in the Cayman S you have to get the RPMS up high thats when the fun begins. I think the Z has a better leaner power band. The cayman S is a nice car though!

07 350z gives you about 90% of the driving experience of the cayman s at half the cost. I had a 7k deposit on an 07 cayman s BTO.But it was "lost" on its way over here. After waiting 6 weeks for it to be built/shipped and them not finding it after a week I gave up. Walked into z dealer on got my car overnighted from out of state.
Cayman is much much more refined but the 07 Z is a great value for what it is. An entry level sports coupe at a very affordable price. This is not to be confused with "sporty coupes" such as tibby, altima, eclipse, etc. Z has no direct competitors at all. Very smart product placement by nissan.
No regrets here on my 07 except I wish there was a TT kit already out.

Besides, I'd rock a M coupe over a fugly Cayman.

I've seen 13.6 thru 13.9s as the norm. So if your benchmark is the 1/4 mile then the 20K+ you spend on the cayman could be used for TT or SC.
I would get the cayman if I could afford it and with cars, I don't like any payments.
$0.02
