It is just tight. I got mine off after playing with it unconsciously at redlights and other times when I was sitting. It just finally broke free one day, although it felt like I was bending the shifter.

You can put some protective rags around the base and use something like vise grips, but be careful or you'll scratch it.

It's screwed on.. I suggest you wrap it well with rags and put a long (over 14") adjustablw wrench on the lower, flat area and give it a twist.. Having the long wrench give you all the leverage you need to get it off on the first try.. Remember, counter-clockwise removes it..

To get the **** off you might have to 'lock' the upper half of the shifter with a pair of vice grips. The upper half is coated with black plastic. Once you have a grip on it then turn the **** - by the base with a wrench -

Hey John- I meant to ask you- how the hell do you keep from burning your hand on those really hot days? I know the top of my stock shift **** gets extremely hot - enough to burn if you touch it for even a few seconds.
