The idea is, say you have a 7500 RPM redline, at 2,500 RPM's you are going xx MPH at redline it will be triple that speed (same gear).

I used to set cruise control in my BMW off of gearing because the speedo was 9 mph off when it said 90 (aka I was going 81). The Z is about 4-5 MPH off at highway speeds, at least, thats what my GPS tells me.

You technically re-gear everytime you shift, how would re-gearing be bad for the engine. As long as you aren't cruising at high RPM's and starving the engine of oil (more a function of having a big enough oil pan to support the revs) then it shouldn't hurt anything.
