Default 350z & tires on the track

Does anyone have any experience taking your sports cars on the track? I am wondering about tire wear on street tires. I have heard that a few rough days on the track will kill regular street tires. Is it worth getting another set of wheels and getting some hoosiers if I plan to go to the track a few times a year? I would hate to ruin a 1000$ worth of pilot sports for a few days of fun.

It would easily cost you 1600+ for some rims and Hoosier tires. So i'd just stick with the original and buy new ones when the time arrives

I agree with dvlad. The race tires will cost you just as much, and wear out the same anyway.

I think it depends. What kind of racing and what kind of driver are you?

Personally, that is the first thing I'm going to purchase for the car. I have recently started running autocross and have pretty much destroyed my brand new street tires after only three races. Autocrossing is very harsh on tires! I will put either Hoosiers or Kuhmos on the Rays wheels for racing only and buy another set of wheels for everyday racing.

If you drive smoothly, tire wear is not as bad as you would expect. Also, the driving schools prefer you to stay on street rubber until you become an advanced student (please excuse me if you are already). I suspect that when we do make that switch, the handling of the Z will be out of this world AND we'll be going extremely fast for a car without the proper safety equipment. Be careful with your $35,000 car. I have a small, inexpensive dedicated track car and would think long and hard before I take the Z out on track. I've seen too many of the fast expensive road cars hit something hard... (like vipers, cobras, M3s, etc.)

Hey, being that you live in NC, have you been to VIR yet?

Not VIR, but I have been to driving school down at CMP in Kershaw, SC. Flyingscot, do you belong to any z clubs? I know that trianglez has several track days at vir and cmp a few times per year. I would eventually like to drive at these. What is your dedicated track car?
