Default Question about wear and tear

OK it snowed bad here again and I got stuck in the alley like usual. In my attempts to get out my tires would spin and my rpms would reach 5-6k alot of times. I had to get press the gas that hard to get out. I just want to know if I'm killing my engine or trans or drivetrain?

you are making a lot of heat with no real airflow (due to the fact you aren't moving) but at least it's cold out.....just don't make it a habit, try to give it a rest between things like that.

The only time I go through the alley is leaving home for work and getting home. So once I get into the garage it's in for the night.

just keep an eye on your temp, if you blow a hose or worse, you will be unhappy.

I forgot to add that this is only like the 3rd day this has happened. Its only after a big snow storm it's not an everyday thing.

do you have snow tires?

if not, you may damage the car when you crash it.

High performance All season tires and 200 lbs of tube sand. It does fine on the regular streets its just the alley where I have problems. The city doesn't plow the alleys so its like 8 inches of snow in there. But as far as the regular streets the city is on top of it right away they start plowing as salting as soon as the first flake falls you'll never get stuck just the alleys .

So its sorta like revving my engine in neural since the tires spin with no effort?

well, not really, in neutral, you dont have the flywheel spinning the trans which turning the driveshaft / rear end / rear wheels....

in gear, you are spinning everything...

If it was a good idea it would be recommended regularly in the maintenance schedule.

Every 4,000 miles: Park vehicle in snow. Rock back and forth in first and reverse at 6,000 RPM.

I never said it was good idea I just wanted to know how bad it is for the car. I'm sure people doing burnouts and donuts isn't the best idea either. Its not like I'm holding the rmp at 5-6k. it'll touch 5-6k for a split second then I'll back off immediately.

Can't exactly shovel the entire alley. I will be getting a second car by next winter though.

Can you park somewhere other than the alley?

Side streets are just as bad almost when it comes to parking. Like I stated earlier its only after a major storm which isn't very often (only 2 this year) so next time its snow packed like that I just drive. I'm just worried if I could have messed anything up by gunning the engine like that even though it was for a very short time. I did take breaks in between the gunning. The whole ordeal only lasted about 10-12 minutes including time I took to shovel some more. Could it be any worse than driving hard at the track? I don't recall the temp gauge moving any higher than normal.

at the track you have airflow to cool things down.

Shouldn't be hurting anything as long as your not at those rpm's for extended amount of time. Just don't be hitting the rev limiter

OK thanks. I always made sure that if I did hit 5-6k rpm that it was only for a split second.
