Default LSD Rear question ...

Took a test drive today, 2008 base manual coupe. nice car, ive read that the LSD is on the enthusist model and up. i test drove the Base model and lit em up from a stop and both tires left equal marks . i thought an open rear would only spin 1 tire. Can anyone clearify why the base is behaving like it has LSD?

LSD has been explained in detail. The primary advantage is NOT straight line acceleration. Members will often confuse LSD with older rear axles such as positraction. Two different worlds.

if all you care about is straight line acceleration then lsd is not necessary as shown by the 1/4 times. but if you plan on taking your car to a road course or autocross, then lsd is essential. seeing that there is neither a drag strip or a decent road course where i live i didn't think it necessary to step up to an enthusiast.

I have an 06 Base with an LSD now installed, spend to extra money and get the Z with a LSD. Improves overall handling in "Sporty" driving situations. Youll be glad you did. A base isn't worth the savings in the amount of extras you lose.

Screw the "extra's". Its nothing you need anyways, a gay mirror, some cruise control and traction control that you will never use. I would go with the base and purchase a nismo 1.5 way lsd.

+1 Even the oem viscous LSD felt a lot better than the base IMO.

+1. Or a Quaife LSD. You definitely don't want Gay (not that there's anything wrong with that).

The base model Z + a clutch LSD are great street/track cars.

Remember most of you financed your enthusist + models. So 1500 over the price of a base model and 4-6 years of finance charges and you are out 5000-6000. Enjoy your cruise control, nanny TCS/VDC, crappy VLSD and extra weight. I took my 1500 and bought a nismo lsd/springs/sways. Want to meet at the track?

Sorry just my base model pride speaking!!

It is up to the person to find out what they feel like buying and what they want they Z to be. Mine = track hoe.

1. Your math is wrong. Even 6 years of interest is NOT 5-6,000...unless you bought your car at a 'we don't check your credit place' or you bought it from the mob.
2. enjoy keeping your foot on the gas pedal for 5 hours on the highway!

If cruise control makes a sports car wimpy then you had better be tearing out your oh let's see...

Power windows
Stereo
Power steering
Power brakes
Air conditioning
Heating

Then you can have a real manly mans sports car...

And how the heck does 1500 dollars turn into 5-6k? more like MAYBE $150 on top of it

eh, i rather spend a bit and get some type of LSD, HIDS, leather seats, VDC/TCS/ Cruise/ BOSE and still switch some of that stuff out later down teh road. I don't think i'll ever buy a base model of any type of car again after the last car i owned.

well i see not one person has answered your question yet. so here you go.

an open diff, will apply power to the wheel that is easiest to spin. so if one tire is on ice, and the other on dry pavement. then you will just sit there spining one wheel. but under equal traction. equal power will be applied to both wheels. so in a straight line situation, you should leave 2 strips in most cases.

lsd starts to transfer power to the wheel with traction when the other one starts to slip.

when powering through a corner, your outside wheel is turning faster. and more likely to break traction. so that is where most of the power will go. this is why lsd works good for cornering. because it keeps the power equal across both wheels in those situations.

hope that helps.

Yes, very gay mirror. Especially when you're on a dangerous highway and a semi-trailer has his high beams on you and you take your eyes off the road and one hand to adjust the mirror - then an animal jumps out in front of you.

There is more to higher trim levels than just VLSD & a 'gay' mirror

yes i always say go fully loaded. i have never once bought a vehicle and said to myself. "gee, i wish i didnt get this option"

but there has been more than a few times i have kicked myself in the azz, because i didnt just pony up the extra $2000, to get everything.
