50-70mph & 60-80mph times
I was behind a 90'- 96' 300zx Twin Turbo last night doing about 75 mph. Then the guy just dropped a gear and took off. Does anyone have any information on the 50-70 mph and 60-80 mph acceleration times for the new Z car? Also, does anyone have a comparison of all the performance figures for the 90' - 96' Twin Turbo compared to the new Z car. Later dayzzzzzzzzzz

Car magazines may post top gear acceleration times. C&D has them for the 350Z they are for 30-50 and 50-70. I forget the real numbers but they were like 7 or 8 sec for each. This may sound slow to you because the engine is in overdrive 6th gear. A corvette is even worse ( I think ).
But when you want to accelerate as fas as possible form 50-90 or whatever you have to drop down a couple of gears. In fact 3rd gear is good for 88 mph. An easy way to compare two cars is take 0-100 time, subtract the 0-60 time and you have 60-100 time. This is like 8.5 sec for the 350Z. when I get home I'll look up the 300ZX tt to see how they compare.
I think you get a lot of info from 0-100 or 1/4 mile times. 0-60 depends on the launch, but the higher mph is more about the power and the gearing.

I thought I read in the new Automobile or Car & Driver that the 50-70mph times for the new Z is like 17 seconds. THAT seems very slow. I wasn't sure if it was a misprint or just the gearing. I hope to god it's faster than 17 seconds...........Later dayzzzzzzzz

350Z C&D test:
30-50 9.1 sec,
50-70 8.6 sec
you must have added them for a 30-70 17.7 sec.
Here are other cars top gear 30-70 (for comparison)
350Z ------------------------------17.7 sec
M3 (2001)------------------------ 17.2 sec
Boxster S ------------------------18.1 sec
SVT cobra ------------------------15.8 sec
corvette convertable-----------23.4 sec
WRX (5 speed) -----------------24.2 sec
300ZX turbo (5 speed) --------18.6 sec

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Faster than a Vette', you gotta love it...
Faster than alot of cars that are a helluva lot more expensive. Now it's our turn to F&%@ with people that are tailgating us (drop a gear and let er' rip).

It's hard to call, this is top gear acceleration, drop a few gears and a faster car will still be faster than the Z. But it goes to show how flexible the Z's engine is that it can pull from low revs in 6th gear.

SilverZ,
You are correct about the 17 second passing time.
It was from the Automobile Magazine Review:
Top Gear Passing 30-70 = 17.2 seconds.
While this seems like a slow time, I'm impressed that the Z can even go 30 in top gear. None of the vehicles I have ever driven have been able to do that ('75 Volvo Station Wagon, 84 Nissan pickup, 95 Ford Ranger, 92 Toyota Paseo) . So I want to know why any magazine would do a top gear test at 30mph! Who the hell is in top gear at that speed, and even if someone was, who would try to pass without downshifting? Furthermore, since every car with an automatic transmission will downshift during that test, what's the point? Then half the time the magazines try to tell me that the gearings all f'd up because the car takes to long to pass in freakin' overdrive. If my car was geared to pass quickly at 30, I think it would be really crappy to drive on the highway. So, I guess I want to know why car magazines do the top gear passing tests at speeds starting at 30, 40, or 50 (60-80 is marginal for top gear IMHO, but I'll let it slide for now, since I can imagine many people driving 60 in top gear - but 30- come on).
Seems useless to me, and it has bugged be for quite some time.
Anyone out there who can calm me down with a good explanation of these tests?

96' 300ZX TT Stats
1996 300ZX TT was 0-60 mph in 5.5 sec and 0-100 in 14.6 sec and a quarter mile time of 14.1 sec. So theoretically the 60-100 mph performance would be 9.1 sec.

Yes but not in top gear this is like in 3-4 gear, the 350Z is the same.
