I thought about it, but decided it is only worth the money to have the satisfaction of knowing you may get the car back from the bad guys ASAP. As long as you have comprehensive coverage with reasonable limits, there's no financial advantage to LoJack.

I just talked with a dealer about lo-jack this morning. If you odn't get the car back in 24 hours, you get your lo-jack cost refunded (about $700). If you don't get the car back at all you get $5K!

Now, I didn't get many details, so I'm not sure what the restrictions are, but this sounds really good. Since insurance usually tries to screw you out of value of the car, having an additional $5K to go twoards a replacement car is great.

Worth looking into further.

If you are looking at lojack do yourself a favor and look at other systems currently out that may cost a little more or have monthly fees but if you are worried about getting your car stolen they are much better, lojack is the lower end in terms of technology. Lojack just works when it is activated after a theft, the other systems have options where you can monitor your car's location to within 40 feet on the web at all times, they have a sensor that somehow knows if the car is being stolen and the alarm goes off notifying the service and you as well as shutting the car down. I'll see if I can find them again and post the info.

Here are a couple of websites for new systems, they are GPS based which is why the tracking is so much better. You can even set a top speed alarm in case you lend your car or have kids (personally nobody will drive mine except me) and it will warn you if the speed is exceeded or doesn't allow the car over that speed, I contemplated getting it for my kid's car so I know for sure where he is. The problem with this is that your wife/girlfriend could also look you up if the have the logon and locate your a$$ at the strip joint or other female friend!! Big brother is here.

Default Very interesting

Thanks. Both offer a lot more than just theft control. I like the abilty to unlock doors remotely. Also, the horn and light feature could come in handy at sporting events, etc.

I have LoJack installed on the Z, but the dealer never told me anything about these "refunds" if the car is damaged or not recovered. Are you sure that's right?

Due to my ever present paranoia, I purchased extra insurance from Nissan that will replace my Z with the current model year should it ever be stolen and never recovered. Also, if I ever sell my baby I can cancel this insurance and get a pro-rated refund. You should inquire about this with the dealership.

As far as the discount on the insurance, forget it. With all of the extra insurance through Nissan and with LoJack I got a whopping $18 a year off. I'm in NJ and we have the second highest insurance rates in the country. The idea behind having LoJack or any other anti theft system is not to recoup $$ from the insurance company it is to protect your BIG inviestment - namely the Z.

Drive Safe.

how about just putting a lo-jack sticker in your window (without getting the actual system)? The prospective their would see it and figure it's not worth the risk.

The last time I checked, LoJack did not install any stickers on the vehicle windows. It only makes since...if the culprit knew you had LoJack the first step (after stealing it) would be to disable it. Any pro auto thief would know the sticker is a fake.

Farmers Insurance offers NOTHING for this recovery item.

LoJack sounds like a good idea.

However...

1) my neighbor is a Sheriff. He told me that they will never pursue a stolen vehicle, as the risk to lives is not worth the benefit of the recovered vehicle. (This is not true for every jurisdiction, I know)

2) if the theives are professional, you will never get your Z back

3) if the thieves are NOT professional, you DON'T WANT your Z back!

Just food-for-thought,
Todd

LoJack is a product you purchase (usually for around $500 one-time cost), that is used as a recovery device.

If you Z is stolen, you contact LoJack/police. LoJack/police will activate a satellite signal, which your Z will receive. Then, your Z will start transmitting its relative information. Since there is no GPS involved, exact pinpoint locations are not possible. A police vehicle equipped with LoJack tracking can determine your Z is in the very close vicinity. If they see your Z, then can theoretically recover it.

Oh also, LoJack in the Z DOES have a lithium battery it uses and will last about 1 week while activated.

I have heard many cool stories. It may be a very good idea.

Insurance typically will offer nothing for this device, so it is good for personal piece-of-mind only, and is not for cost savings.

There are a couple things to consider, IMHO...

1) if someone steals your Z for a joyride, they will redline the heck out of it, bump curbs, ruin tires, etc. They will typically thrash the Z before it is recovered. Although, I have heard of under a half-hour recovery times. That is cool.

2) if a professional steals your Z, they will have it cut up and parted out before it would possibly be recovered. You might get the emblems back.

3) in cool cases, you will recover your Z intact, and all belongings in your Z. That would be totaly awesome.

Todd
