I have also had the same problem. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't hear anything. I'm beginning to think I am paranoid.

I get the exact same noise as the one described in the original post. I have an 04 base model with ~2000 miles on it. It has been happening ever since I got it. I thought that it was normal, I didn't know any better since this is my first car with a manual. I guess I better bring it into the dealer one of these days.

Ditto!

Only happens in first and second gears. I have about 1100 miles, so I am going to wait until first oil change to have them look at it.

Same problem or is it. I went to the dealer last week and the service tech drove with me. first i drove my car and the clunking was heard. i also have a rattling sound when my car is in neutral and when taking off from 1st gear. the service tech the clunking is normal because the tranny is bouncing to support the pressure of the i dont know drive shaft. he says that they did not use brass but used metal to create the drive shaft. and in that case if the drive shaft would then crack or break during high pressure. he says its the designed of the enginge to do that. he also said the rattling sound is normal. is this a right statement. what do you guys think.

i have 6000 miles on my 2004 Z and like many of the others on this post have the EXACT same noise coming from the transmission when you engage/dis-engage the clutch(noticed much easier in a garage) from a stop or starting out in 1st. i work at a Nissan dealership here in Ohio and the car did it since the day i purchased it. My personal belief is that it is the throw-out bearing in the transmission making the noise, just for the simple fact that it immediately fades away when you engage the clutch. i haven't heard any remedies for this problem yet, and there are no T.S.B.(technical service bulletins) on it so far. anyone hear any new updates to this noise yet?
