Everytime I am at a stop (downhill) I always start in 2nd.
I usually skip 5th if I am going straight to a highway, unless I am spirit driving.

Well from what I understand the synchro's are designed to work best with the gears being shifted in sequence... 1, 2, 3... 3, 2, 1... when you skip gears the gears synchro is having to do more work. But I've never seen how the inside of a newer manual trans works so I cant really tell if thats the case.

If it does 'hurt' it, its such a small amount I don't think it matters much. I did it all the time in all the manuals I drove and didn't have any problems so I say if you wanna do it, then do it.

Supposedly double clutching when skipping gears will not wear the synchros down.

The transmision is a upgraded version of the one used in the old 300zxTT which is based off of the ones used in the 280zx which is a standard built universal transmission.
The gearing is a close ratio setup the way I see it this thing has a granny gear. What I mean is first is really a gear for take off. If youv'e ever driven a old Chevy or Ford work truck that has a four speed chances are it was a granny three speed you could take off in second without a load.
Now don't get me wrong don't try to take off in second it's not meant too.
But going from 1st to 3rd or 2nd to 4th is not going to hurt the trans.
I've run 1st and 2nd out then thrown it in nuetral to coast down to speed or thrown it in 6th.
You do more damage by grinding or misshifting then anything else
If your worried about the life remember to have the transmission serviced when your supposed too if not sooner when doing a lot of hard driving.
Look at you with your big dick.

I'm just playin. Thanks for the background.

I heard from a message board that any sort of gear-skipping will result in the 350Z flipping over and catching on fire.

Consider yourself warned!

Yeahh, down shifting is not so healthy for the car, can't you hear it moaning when you do it?

as long as your rpm matches the gear you want to shift to it will cause no harm.

Yeah i didnt think anything was wrong with it...i mean it slides into 6th from 4th as easy as 5th does. I'm not really sure about this rev-matching idea? Are you saying you should rev the engine slightly as you let the clutch out? Or rev the engine as you shift gears with the clutch in? I've heard of shifting without using the clutch by rev matching and then just pulling the shifter out of a gear and into another but that never seemed to good to me.

I feel weird skipping gears...just feels so unnatural. But like someone said..long as you don't bog the engine and rev match properly, you should be fine.

You should only need to revmatch when down-shifting... So if your in 6th gear going 35 mph at about 1300 RPM and you want to go to 2nd gear, you need to bring the revs up to about 4500 RPM when you press the clutch in and it needs to be near those revs when you let it out going into 2nd gear. That way its a smooth transition and there is no slipping of the clutch.

But now we're talking about clutch wear and downshifting, which wasn't part of the original thread.

For skipping gears upshifting you just have to wait a little longer for the RPM's to drop to the appropiate level for that gear your going into. So you need to rev-match for upshifts if your skipping gears. But the revmatching simply involves waiting for the revs to drop rather than blipping the throttle.

I believe it's called "short shifting", should be no problem.

i always do this. i'll usually give the car hell in 1st & then switch to 3rd and etc. I was also curious if this was bad on the tranny or not.
