I didn't read the two page thread but no...it doesn't hurt anything. the manual tranny is designed for you to pick the gear as long as the clutch disengages the gears before you decide .

no, just as long as you do it after second gear because them being the biggest gears they are needed to pull the car.

Thumbs up

Just go from 1st to 6th, it gives the tranny time to ponder why "she" had to be the one to get purchased by you.

Just don't try to cram it into whatever gear your going into... I love to run second gear out and then just nudge it into sixth.

i don't meant to jack the thread but.
is it ok to hold down the clutch pedal when you are waiting at signal?
my co-worker always leaves the gear in 1st, and hold down the clutch at the signal light.

you should put the car in neutral if you can and let the clutch out. Youre putting strain and wear on the release bearing. the owners manual actually says that somewhere in it i think.

Ok, so would going from 1st, to 3rd (but still going to 2nd while clutch is still in in) ok ? I usually only do this downhill with speeds are faster, and I rev match.

depends how youre doing this. when i first got the car. and first learned how to drive stick. my 6th gear synchro broke.

cuz i would sometime go from first to second, then throw it into 6hth fast, which doesnt give the synchro time to engage. u can even feel the synchro open up if you shift real slow.

or somethin like that. but that was 2 years ago. got a new free trans too.

I've done this since I first started driving and haven't ever had a single issue. I drove my Jeep 2, 4, 6 for 3 years and never used 1,3, or 5 unless I was in a sticky situation. My gas mileage increased in the jeep from 10mpg to 16mpg. In the Z i just naturally started skipping gears. It's not going to hurt anything.

it is fine to skip gears, as long as you rev match... why is this discussion getting so complicated. the only thing you should NOT do is power shift while skipping gears.

i dont skip gears anymore.

but why is rev matching so important skipping gears forward?

rev matching's most important down-shifting.

rev-matching is important in any scenario, it reduces clutch/syncro wear, and it reduces the amount of shock put on trans components while power shifting.

Could you explain this process of rev-matching while powershifting?

To the OP... Skipping shifts, as long as you don't bog down the motor, will not do any noticeable harm to the engine or transmission.

As was pointed out earlier, many GM vehicles come equipped from the factory with a CAGS. It locks out 2nd-3rd gear if the rpm's are between 1200-1800rpm (going off memory for the rpm range) while in first gear and forces a shift to 4th.
