Default smoking when redlining?

Been noticing this lately in the last couple of months...really, since my last oil change. When redlining through the gears i smell oil burning. Well tonight im on the interstate "Playing with" a BMW 330 coupe and i wound 4th gear all the way out and when i was looking in my rearview to see by how much i was pulling away from the Bimmer, i noticed black smoke coming out the back. Not a lot, but enough to see and smell.

Other than that, the car runs great....got 60K miles on it and actually its running (speedwise) as good as it ever has. Just curious if anyone else has noticed the smoking.

Dude its not like we were trying to be the fast and the furious out there or anything. It was a hot chick driving the 330 and she came up beside me trying to bait me so we just did a little interstate run thats all.

black smoke? or blue/gray smoke?

black smoke is typically unburnt fuel

blue/gray is oil burning

but having said that if you smell burning oil, the question worth looking into is "Is my oil level low".

and "after going WOT a few times, has the amount of oil dropped?" if so, you have a leak, whether internal or external must be assessed further.

If your level isn't low, and/or isn't dropping, then you may have had a really nasty oil change, where they got it all over the place (look).

check the drain plug and the oil filter.

Personally, when I have a hot chick next to me, I don't race her, I invite her to a drink.

well i am not going to turn this into a pissing match, but wouldn't redlining 4th gear put you around 100mph or so?

good luck with your oil problems. from the sound of it, you are burning oil, perhaps you redline too much and are causing premature wear on the rings?

Fourth gear tops out at 100 MPH plus. Sorry not impressed with the girl or highway antics.

it's all fast and furious until someone loses control, sideswipes a minivan and kills a few kids. but hey, i am sure telling the family members that it was a cute chick in a Bimmer will make them feel a bit better.

LOL-there was absolutely zero traffic on the road besides us and the stretch we were on is straight for a good 3-4 miles.

Ive owned my car since 2003 and i bet i have redlined it less than a hundred times TOTAL. Some folks on here redline theirs a hundred times in a month.

Checked the oil and its maybe a half quart low but its been about 4K miles ince the last oil change. The color of smoke appeared black but to be honest that was just a very quick glance out of the rearview mirror.

I hardly consider what i did with my car abuse. Redlined it in one gear at freeway speeds and then backed off? Give me a break.

Well since everyone on here is getting chippy, 4th gear tops out higher than 100 more like 119 or so.

Wow this board has changed in the last few years...i dont post much and now i know why. Seems like a lot the guys who would be driving Bimmers are now driving Z's.

sorry, you will have to forgive us, we don't find street racing very cool. while i am sure most of us have gotten on the gas every once and a while, advertising it is stupid. you probably could've asked your question minus the street racing part and get better responses.

I can understand that- i should have left the details out. I guess thats why they got rid of the "street racing" forum on here. It wasnt smart, but it was much more harmless than it sounds. We werent burning out from a stoplight slamming through the gears and we werent weaving in and out of interstate traffic or anything like that.

black smoke is unburnt fuel, which is a good chance you may need new valve seals, which is a good chance you have ran the **** out of your engine.

but its a sports car so who wouldnt tehe

yea black smoke like they ^ said is fuel, but i would check a few things i would have somone behind you and in a lower gear get on it a little and see if it white/blue or black smoke. and after your done driving a little hard on it check the oil dip stick, oull it out and see if any white smoke comes out of there. in this case if it is white/blue smoke it is either your piston rings or valve seals, in this case it requires you to pull engine parts arnt bad but labor suck. OH do a compression test as well real easy.

anywho i just went though this on my boosted TC at 10psi i blew a piston ring traded for the 08 350z instead of fixing.

lol that is some dirty business. sucks for whoever gets that tc.

i would do a compression test either way, considering you have smoke coming out of the back of the car.
