Anyone have a picture of the exact location of the remote for the "chin thing"

BTW, my wifes Pathfinder has the same FOB and it works from 100+ feet. I think they put the antenna in the Z, in a non-ideal location.

That's odd. I always considered the range on the remote to be comfortably long. I can be at least five or six cars away in the parking garage at work and no problem. Plus it's about double the range of my girlfriend's Honda remote (for the CRVJ).

Chin thing works really well with spiky hair!

For that question earlier... the chin and remote thing is supposed to amplify the signal from the remote to your car through the strands of hair on your head, thus the better succession rate when activating/deactivating from a distance. So I have been told at least.

wow, that sounds scary. as in "it's gotta be bad for you somehow."

yeah, i think the remote range is short. but i never really bothered to measure how many lengths - i just know it's short compared to a toyota highlander.

Well, I decided to test this, I pointed my remote at an antenna hooked up to a spectrum analyzer chin vs no chin and found a 4dB increase in power using the chin thing method.

This however has nothing to do with your hair, it is a 315MHz signal so most likely you are giving the antenna a pseudo ground plane and refective surface.

No chin...

took like 5 minutes, longest part was finding a 300MHz antenna.

found a solution to all the people that don't wanna be embarassed walking around a parking lot w/ their remote under their chin....i got pretty good results when i hold the remote to my chest...and it's easier to play off when a hottie sees you

I am in the process of designing a better antenna for the fob. It will be internal and increase distance by factor of 3 minimum. Would anyone be interested in me developing a commercially available version?

The VCO on the vob is putting out 10dBm so if I get a 50% efficient antenna, it's gonna work from a loooong way away.

I don't know what you are guys are complaining about not having good enough reception... all you had to do was ask the dealer for the "super deluxe" remote key fob. I have range for miles.

Just curious....You say putting it under chin is giving it a pseudo ground, why wouldn't you hand provide the same "pseudo groud"? I don't get how my chin would be any different than my hand (no jokes from the peanut gallery please).

I tried this out a few times, and what I find is that it does seem to work better the higher I hold my hand, but I don't seem to notice my chin having any special powers.

I was *very* skepticle about this chin thing, but it frickin' works....and good too. It really does extend the distance of the fob by quite a bit. i was disappointed on the distance the fob could be used....this makes it a lot better. lol

Your head has a different dielectric constant than your hand. More liquid and more bone. Any beefy portion of your body would probably load the antenna enough to improve the performance, it just so happens people used their chin, probably cuz it is up high to give better "line of sight" to the receiver in the car.

It is kind of like when you grab your antenna on your radio and your reception improves, you are capacitively loading the antenna. The antenna in the the fob is <2 inches and is a loop. However as you might guess, this is not an adequate length to make a 300MHz antenna. Which is why the transmitter is putting out +10dBm but when I measure the output on my spectrum analyzer, it is -45dBm. Even a crappy antenna should be -15dBm assuming 0dBi gain and range loss of 25dB.

I could go into a lot of detail but suffice to say it is a really bad antenna. I have a prototype that is doing much better than the stock antenna.
