Default RE040

Today - while driving moderately - the Z broke into a slide going around a corner. Mind you - I was not driving agressively at all. The MINIVAN in front of me did not have a problem....

I recovered quickly, but it was somewhat shocking. I have felt it get a little squirlly in the past, but never like this. Tires are always properly inflated (35psi when cold)

So - my basic question is - how bad are those stock tires??? And - what are some recomendations for replacements? I'm in Northern Texas - so snow is not a problem...

And yes - when I search for 'tires', I got 34 pages of results, so I posted this...

Thanks in Advance - John

Are your tires bold?

Those tires are pretty good from what I remember but my rears were bold after 10,000 miles. They are really soft.

I got the RE050A Pole Position to replace my RE040. Much happier with the Pole Position. You're going to get about 20 different suggestions, though. I thought the RE040 sucked, too.

Overall the stock potenzas are not to bad you just gotta be careful in the rain. They suck bigtime under wet conditions, i dont drive aggresively in the rain and i was loosing tcation with these a few times going around corners and stuff. I switched to the Flakens and havent had a problem since.

Generally if the tires look ok and it happened to you, its generally taking a corner progressivly faster that adds more pressure to the wheels as you speed up when the tires are COLD This is done mostly in left corners where the arc of the corner is longer and you will have more speed near the end.

If you just started driving the car and it's sorta coldish that day and you take a long sweeper left you will notice it get sideways under a normal corner. Mine does it with new 275s in the back when they are not warm.

You might look at a thread titled “What brand tires should I get?”

the stock tires are junk... i would highly advise not to purchase them for replacements, there are plenty of options.

i personally have falken f452's, which are pretty good and not as expensive. i've also had the vredstein's, which had very good grip, but they were pricey.

im not familiar with texas weather patterns, but if your area does get a lot of rain, go with an all-season tire. however, from the goodyear all-seasons i have, dry traction sucks and they are fairly loud.

I just replaced my stockers (got 25k out of them) with Pilot Sport AS. They are very quiet and have good wet/dry grip.

Default should have added

I have about 5,800 miles on the car - they are not bald. And no - it hasn't rained in Dallas for weeks. Maybe - since it was an entrance ramp to Rte 183 - it might be a little slick (oil from trucks?).

But - like I said - have felt it 'squirm' a bit - again only in the dry weather...

Anyway - thanks for the suggestions. Will probably price the RE050's...

HAHAhaha...

I thought that my stock tires were absolutley perfect... untill the same thing happend to me. I went to a tire shop and the inside of all my tires were worn. I needed an alignment like a full set of tires before then. So i got a set of volk 19 and they were great! (untill someone stole my lugs and f-ed up my rims) reguardless I got yokohama S drive tires and there awsome and cheap as it gets. (there on my stock 17s but i dont think size will matter.)

Popular choices are:

Michelin PS 2 (Generally considered the best)
Good Year Eagle GSD3
Toyo T 1R

I'm on my second set of T 1Rs. Good wet/dry grip, quiet, 25,000 miles per set. Biggest criticism is the sidewalls are to soft... not an issue for me because I don't drive at the limits. EdgeRacing is good source.

I'm in Dallas, I also replaced stock to RE050A PP at 20k miles. So far they have been great and yes, a lot better than stock.

I think manufacturers like to choose RE040 as a stock tire for a couple reasons...

1 - They're cheap.
2 - They suck, so when someone can spin the tires easily they think "Damn, this car is fast!" so they buy it.
