The fact that everybody talks about boost around here for major numbers means to me that the z will not be able to pump out numbers like the supra. Are there any n/a options on the horizon for the z? The 2jz can take so much work its rediculous. Somehow i doubt the z can handle pressure(boost) like the supra. Factory turbo engines are number 1 in my book. Ill take an I6 turbo over a v8 anyday! Let alone a v6.

I had a 93 and then a 97 Supra all decked out vailside kit and about 10,000 under the hood. Now I have a stock Z (so far). Yes I miss my supra. That thing was frickin fast.
But in the twistes it was a dog. The Supra was too big and too heavy. The Z is more of a sports car to where the Supra is just a dragster. My Z will stick and take a corner like I’ve never seen. I’ll take a Z any day. Put 10 Gs into a Z and you’ve got a Supra Killa. Definitely on the track. Give it time the Z’s reputation will far surpass the legend of the Supra; the Z is a baby in the street and track seen.

Why couldent the Z take boost?

The N/A MKIV only made 222 hp to the Z's 287 and that is only 30 hp shy of the turbo MKIV....

And the MKIV was a horrible drag car... 60 foot times on street tires SUCKED form everything I have seen.... I know FWD cars with better launches....

In terms of money, I think the 350Z is the better car to mod if you want to go all the way. The stock turbos on the Supra IV wont handle the needed boost for 700+ hp applications w/o NOx so why pay the extra money for the stock turbos.

As for the I6 vs the V6 question... When going for big horses, you are eventually going to have to upgrade the stock internals so you might as well get balanced crank shafts, pistons, etc.

Iron vs Aluminum block... hmmm. Super glue?

Yes, you will have to sacrifice a Supra to the Car God though.

jokes aside, you probably won't be able to strap a larger turbo onto the engine like the Supra.

As an alreadly track car, I think the Z has the chance to be better, even though I doubt the engine will be able to handle huge power levels that the 2JZ has.

After there is more time to develop the VQ35 I'm sure we will start seeing some big numbers from turbo'd and supercharged Zs. Plus, with enough money, anything is possible. If the block proves to be a weak point to major power production I think there are enough 350Z owners with enough money to make an aftermarket block a reality, and if that happens there will really be no limit to how much power you can make. And as far as an aluminum V6 not being able to hold up to the abuse, look at the new TA Performance aluminum block for Buick GNs - all aluminum design that can take up to 3000 horsepower!

Track racing is different. I do think the z will be a better all around performer, but talking about pure power my point was that the 2jz and any other turbo engine is made to handle boost. They can take far and beyond what the factory turbo puts out. to be honest im not positive but i would think the block on the turbo supra was far more reinforced than the n/a. An engine like the 350's is not made to handle boost. It can take some for sure, but not to the degree that engines like the 2jz or the 4g can take. Add that to the balanced "I" configuration of the engine and were talkin a serious car.

The Z's resale value will never be like it was back in the 70's!! I bought my first Z in 1972 for the grand sum of $3800.....then sold it in 1977 for $3600! Damn I wish I still had that car!!

1972 - red 240Z
1977 - light blue 280
1978 - bronze 280
1985 - red
1991 - black
2003 - DB, all options offered, Borla exhaust, Stillen grille, grounding kit, 6 coats of Zaino!

yes the 2jz-gte engine was more reinforced than the 2jz-ge. IIRC, it also had different heads...

also, the 4g63 is NOT balanced like the 2jz engine. i4 engines are not balanced like i6 engines...

Are you refering to my post? If so i never said the 4g was as perfictly balances as the 2jz. I was comparing the 2jz to the 350.

Edit: Ok i looked again and i can see why you got misinformed. In saying that i was talking about the I6.

Default ALL aluminum 800hp+ SR20DET engine

If you ask me nothing matches the Nissan SR20DET for sure power to weight and high performance part availability. Check this 800+hp SR20DET by JUN. Just add sleeves. I have seen SR20DET's put into 300ZX's, Supras, etc. you name it.

It revs like crazy too. The SR20DET is one of the most popular engines in Japan and Australia. Just drop one of those modified SR's in a 350Z and see what happens. And it is ALL aluminum!

Swap the king of all straight 6 engines in, the RB26DETT for over 625 rwhp.

I think considering the Z is a $30k car and the Supra was a $40k, you could do alot to a Z for the price difference between a modified Supra and a Z.

That JUN one is expensive but you can get alot of power out of an SR20DET without spending a whole lot and they're very light.

it's nice to see a lot of optimistic people here, but a lot of you guys need a reality check. The v6 in the Z is a cookie cutter engine that is shared across multiple model lines. There is nothing wrong with that, but it will never be the monster that the supra's engine is.

And of COURSE you can pump money in anything, but how many z owers are anywhere near the ~350-400 RWHP that basic BPU (boost controller, downpipe, exuast ect...) supras are? The *thing* about supras is that you can spend a little and get a LOT.

ok, but i have to spend 45k to buy a USED!! supra.. so even 1000 bucks in mods i am still 15k over what i payed for my Z.. 15k into the engine and i will step up to most anything on the road

about the cookie cutter comment.. many rumors has it the VQ was designed FOR THE z, but is used in other cars to cut cost

Cookie cutter engine?? The VQ engine has had alot of high ratings and is rated as one of the top 10 engines in the world by Ward's Auto.
