Porsche boxer engine??
Does it really matter what the VQ was originally designed for? It is a excellent, compact, smooth engine with good power to weight.
Look at the Volkswagen/Porsche boxer engine, it's origination, how many cars they've been in, etc. It still is a darn good design and has been the foundation of many good vehicles.
I wouldn't be surprised that Nissan had the future compatibility of all their cars, which would include the "Z" in mind when designing the vQ.
Who could argue the success of the Nissan "L" series engines? The 4's were the 6's with 2 cylinders lopped off. I think that design originated from Mercedes Benz from the 60's, the 220 six cylinder engine. But the engine worked great and had great durabiilty.
What about the 3s-GTE engines found in the Toyota MR2, Celica All Trac, etc.
How many car manafactures design an engine to be solely in one model run??? Would that make economic since?
The bottom line is the VQ is an excellent engine that gets the job done, period.

Why would Nissan put any other engine in the Z when it has the VQ??
"“Nine years after their introduction, many engine designs are ready for the scrap heap,” said Bill Visnic, senior technical editor at Ward’s Communications. “Instead, Nissan’s remarkable VQ V6 engine continues as an industry benchmark, reaffirming Ward’s opinion that the VQ ranks as one of the best V6 engines ever developed.
“Nissan’s 3.5L VQ V6 continues as an industry benchmark and a dominant force in the market,” he added. “Ward’s testers remain impressed with the way the VQ is able to deliver remarkable refinement and genuinely stunning performance in so many different vehicles.”
