Default VQHR at high rpm-harsh?

Hello, guys.

I have an '07 350z. Is there anyone else on here with an '07 or '08?

Both stock and with the Nismo CAI, I find that above 5000rpm or so, the engine gets harsh, very loud and almost like it doesn't like to be revved so high. I thought the point of the HR was to make it smoother. There's nothing WRONG with it and there's a lots of power, but is it just me, or does it seem like there's just no reason to rev above 4000rpm in this car?

The day or two after I had the Nismo CAI installed, it felt very different-less power down low and more smoothness up top. I figured the MAF sensor was learning. I don't know if the ECM was reset or not.

I disconnected the battery overnight to see if I could duplicate that behavior, but I can't.

Has anyone found this?

Anyone who wants to chime in with the 2003-2006, please do as well!

Harsh? I drive a VQ35HR G35x sometimes...and I can't describe the engine as harsh. Check your strut bar and see if the engine is buzzing on it or something.

Yeah, the engine is very loud above 5000 rpm. That does surprise me. It's very loud compared to the E46 M3 I had at high rpm. I guess Nissan likes it that way.

I have/had a 08 Z (wrecked) and it did that. I actually like that because it gets so loud and crazy it just gets me hyped up. Its a good feeling. I miss it now

I don't mind the noise, but you feel the vibration through the steering wheel, etc. It's always been like that.

My Civic Si sounded great and was smooth as silk all the way to redline-but it had no torque! lol.

The only thing I don't like about the loudness at high rpm's is that people think you're trying to race them or gassing it -- when you're just in the sweetspot if the powerband!

What don't you get? He's saying the engine is unrefined sounding above 5k RPM. He's asking if you noticed that.

My VQ35DE does that to an extent also. Use to with intake/exhaust/spacer/TPs have a power spike right around 4500 RPMs. On wet roads it would light the rears up. Kind of fun if you ask me.

As far as the Nismo CAI, many members here have reported that they actually reduce performance, and if you have them installed you need to have an ECU reflash in order to get the most out of them.

'07 HR With 3000 miles on it. Everytime I go above 5000K it gets loud, but it just sounds like a VTEC type sound where the valves open farther (or just longer) and let more sound out. If anyone's ever driven an RSX Type-S you'll know what I'm talking about, it's a tame little grandma car until you hit about 6500 rpm then the gates of hell open and it sounds like an angry blender all the way to 8200. Sounds like you're destroying the car from the outside (had my buddy with the RSX do a drive by) but the honda motors are definitely designed to do that.

My dad's IS 350 has a much lower redline (just over 6k? I think) and that engine is smooth as silk even when you're spanking it. By comparison, I think the HR sounds amazing at those high RPMs. And I LOVE lighting up the stock tires when slamming it into 3rd on a wet road.

I know what you mean, but I think it's very different. I had a 2007 Si (same engine as RSX) and when it opened up, it got much louder, yes. It's really cool. The intake sound is actually tuned in that car with extra tubing to give exaclty the sound they wanted.

I only got rid of it because Honda wouldn't fix the tranny. That's why I have a 2008 VW GTI instead.

But it was much smoother. In the Z, you feel so much vibration through the steering wheel and everything.

Obviously no one has driven a Honda V6 with Vtec at high rpms. It is much louder. Even the S2k is much louder.
