Default Shady Mechanic?

I had a problem filling my tank up with gas (gas pump shuts off repeatedly before the tank is full).

I took it to a Nissan dealership to have it fixed and they put a new shutter valve on the tank.

I have a warranty so it did not cost me anything. However, in the process of addign the part, they broke my fuel guage and I ran out of gas a week later because the fuel guage was stuck on 1/4 tank and it was actually empty.

So....now I took it back to them and they said they found the problem (again). Oh, and by the way, the gas still does not go into my tank very well so they didn't fix the right thing when they fixed the shutter valve.

Now they say they know the problem and it's a float thing in the gas tank. They also informed me that I have a 100 dollar deductible with my warranty and they are going to collect it this time because they forgot to get it on the last round. I guess that's fair?

I'm just kind of pissed because I do not want to start this vicious cycle of getting my car "fixed" only to have it break down on me a week later because they broke something else.

BTW, the dealership is D-Patrick Nissan in Evansville, IN

Ive never heard of the 100 dollar deductible for something under factory warranty. If that were so, wouldn't they charge 100 for the axle clicking TSB etc?

is it a factory warranty or an aftermarket one....cuz on aftermarket ones (or even extended ones, as they like to outsource the warranties for extended ones). on one i had awhile back for my spec v was a 50$ deductible

^+1 I assumed it was factory, otherwise your insurance company would have been the one telling you about the deductible. (typically)

It is an extended warranty. I was aware of the deductible. Just kind of sucks that they are charging me now when they were the ones who caused this problem. I mean, sure I should have paid it on the first service call, but I got lucky. I think it's shitty that they are making me pay for their mistakes.

To be honest, I think that is fair then, if you have an extended warranty. Nissan was probably shorted 100 dollars in the check to them previously. Now its up to you to decide if you think they are a competent shop and use them again. I know how I feel about my dealer

You have a good point ^. Thanks for helping me sort this out. I thought it seemed fair in the grand scheme of things. I still wish I could have slid out of there and not had to have confronted them the second time and then had to pay. Oh well.

Dealers don't make squat on factory warranties. They get the "book rate" no matter how long it takes, and it almost always takes longer than "book" for most warranty items. Don't know about extended though. Oh, and actually it is the tech himself who takes the hit.

What they may be doing is charging you $100 for a "ongoing problem." You pay $100 once until the problem is corrected. That sounds reasonable.

I had the exact same problem you just typed out. Im sure if you check my posts you will see my outcome as well. I actually ran out of gas several times before they replaced my entire fuel system. New Tanks new fuel pumps lines and all.

Everytime they went in to repair the shutter valve or something else the fuel gauge would stop working. Everything was fixed under warranty and I did not have to come out of pocket for anything including the versa loaner they gave me.

I thought a lot of our cars had problems with the pump shutting off. I have this problem at certain gas stations. Have you tried different gas stations?

Yes! and luckily I only have the problem at one station and really haven't had too much trouble at any others. Unfortunately, the one station I have trouble with is the most convenient for me.

My whole problem began with the gas not pumping correctly, but got worse when after one frustrating trip to the pump where I really forced the tank to take the gas, my car wouldn't start. I guess I somehow flooded the car and after about 10 minutes, I was finally able to get 'er started. That's the point where I took it in to have it fixed. Now, I'm afraid I may have opened pandora's box.

+1 I have one station that does this to me as well. Only the one though so I just avoid it.
