I've heard that it is good to redline the car every once in a while to get the cobwebs out so to speak.

Might not be an issue with Z's because they are usually driven pretty hard anyways, but if you have an average family sedan that never goes about 4,000 RPMs. Should you give it the beans every once in a while?

tell you what. you go and do that deliberately once a week and see how long it takes to cause problems. then come back and report your results

 

If you cut the Number 3 yellow wire from the harness it will disable the cut out feature when you hit 6,500 RPMS and allow you to go up to the mid 7,000's. That's how you blow out the cobwebs so to speak. If you want the cut out back, just strip both ends of the wire (#3 yellow), splice and wrap with black tape.

 

Simply put, yes. You should redline an engine as often as possible.

I'm at the dealership now waiting on my Z so I can do you a favor. Go out to breakfast and redline the $hit out of your car. Then after a piston shoots through your hood you can have them tow it here. I'll give you a ride home. It will be easy to find me, just look for the guy doing this

 

^ I probably do, do it at least once a week with the Z. Have had it for a year now and no problems. Usually 2nd gear getting on to a highway so I can get it up to 70.

I wonder why they geared 1st and 2nd so tall? I figure with higher ratios they car would be sustansially quicker, maybe even less jerky, espeically with the 1st to 2nd shift. Then they could make 6th gear tall for gas efficiency.

did you buy a corolla or a Z? I wouldn't schedule a weekly redlining session or anything stupid like that, but it's a sportscar. it was created in mind that the driver would be pushing it.

 

Those are some strong a** cobwebs to blow out of your engine if you need to redline it.

 

Since the car hits the rev limiter, don't think you can do all that much damage if you just do it on occasion.

I actually like to start my car cold in the morning and keep it at the rev limiter for a good 2 minutes.

 

thanks I tried that this morning and I got a CEL. I took it to pep boys and they read the code, and told me that it was just the heater letting me know it was working exceptionally well and that it will go away after doing it a couple times more.

will report back with my findings, PS I love how quickly my windows defrosted!

I'm sure you pretty much know nothing about cars. The redline isn't even the maximum load the engine can handle. It's what Nissan thinks will keep the engine in decent shape through it's life. They also factor in the fact that the engine loses power after a certain max RPM. Hence the HR has redline at 7500 while the DE is at 6600.

Once a week? That's nothing.
