How is it worthless? It gives you about a minute or so before it re-locks (pretty nice safety feature if you ask me).

Unless you have the movement capacity of a sloth you should be able to open the door before it re-locks.

hate to see this kind of stuff happen to daily drivers

i locked my keys in my car once too and it was a pain to get out, luckily the car wasnt running or had an alarm system so i was able to get the keys out with disturbing my neighbors

hopefully these kind of things wouldnt not happen to you anymore.

okay, so 24 hours at idle.. That's 3.5L of HC per rotation, and say his idles at 600RPM, so that's 24*60 min * 600Rpm= 1440*600 = 864000 rotations * 3.5L = 3,024,000 liters of clean air wasted. though the actual weight of carbon dioxide released can't be more than the amount of gasoline burned, in this case 8 gallons at ~6.15lbs /gallon = 49.2 lbs burned.

Sounds like he should plant a tree in that barren wasteland of a front yard he's got.

My 06 base doesn't even auto lock when I am driving down the street. I thought that was kind of odd, but maybe the base models do not auto lock.

I'm changing the oil, it's draining out now. I'm not taking any chances. Even though i just changed it a week ago, i'm sure it's very contaminated having idled for 20 hours. engine spots were a little hot, but I don't think anything overheated. I drove it a little before turning it off in attempt maybe to burn off any carbon deposits before they cool and become harder to remove. It seems to run just as good as before, no noises even at high rpms, same power & acceleration.

The gas gauge reads above full. To my knowledge that means 12 gallons. So, my car burnt approximately 8 gallons of gas in 20 hrs @ 30degF.

So i think i'm in the clear. Just ate the gas ($15 for 8 gal of 91 here). Woooh
Update: and after I changed the oil, I closed the hood with my keys sitting on top of the engine, and the car is locked. What do I do now?

One time I had placed my keys in the trunk while unloading groceries. I turn back around and the wind just was just hard and shut the car trunk. I waited, kind of wondering what to do and I see a kid with a Bible (thought it was a sign lol) - asked if I could use his phone and called AAA. He came with a small ballon type device, the window opened ever so slightly with a slimjim (he kind of pulled it back a little), expanded the ballon which was enough for him to slide a thin metal rod with a hook at the end. He then navigated that thing and managed to click the unlock door button. Done in 20 minutes, cost = $0. Thank you AAA!

The auto lock you guys are talking about, as far as i know, is for "accidental unlocks". I.E. if you have your key fob in a purse or pocket with keys or other items and something happens to hit the button without you knowing about it, it will relock after a certain time. This way if you happen to go to the mall or something like that, and this happens to you, no one can walk by open your door and steal whatever you have or even your car. My 06 Track Edition does it, which surprised me the first time i did it, left me standing there going "i know i unlocked my doors". I think its one of those things that isnt needed, but can be a silent savior. Plus, is it really that much of a hassle to just hit the button again? Just my $.02

dude u instantly started looking at cutting fuel and that was ur problem, last year i had my aunt start my car since she was going outside to warm it up, well i go out its locked running and i have no spare at the time, i tried for 2 hours on my own and couldn't get it unlocked, i had it on the lock and for some reason would not release must be due to it running the only way is to hit the button idk...but anyway i ended up calling a 24 hour tow truck place that had a guy for these things and he came over and popped it open in about 15 seconds with a little rubber piece to get in the door with a long bendable tool and he just popped it right open, no more than 15 seconds and cost 30 bucks...should have kept trying!!!

i havent checked after come to think of it, but i think u need to hit the button if this ever happens again to unlock the doors and that the lock itself by the handle will not release otherwise to open from the outside handle.

i now have a spare..lol

Here is a solution that i came up with that can help you guys out in case this happen in the future.

- Go to walmart and buy a magnetic spare key box for $2, see pic.

- Put a copy of you key in there, then stick the magnetic box underneath your car, anywhere that has a flat metal and can stick securely. I stick mine to the left of my exhaust muffler. You can put it underneath the driver side door, where normally the jack stand would go to, so you can easily reach down and get it just in case you lock yourself out.

I included a copy of my house key just in case im too drunk and drop all my keys down the sewer.....

....took me 5 minutes to get mine unlocked with this method

Or call a locksmith that knows what they are doing. Leaving the car on overnight because you can't figure out how to open it is plain stupid.
