Default Wont go into first while driving?

I was driving towards a stop sign so i downshifted to second and then i pushed in the clutch and wanted to put it into first (but to still have the clutch pedal down, i just wanted to get a "head start" so that once i stoped i would simply just have to give some gas and let go of the clutch), but i couldent shift into first. Once i was moving at about 10 mph i was able to. Has anyone noticed this? Is it some kind of safty lock so that you wont downshift to first?

Yup, probably ... how fast were you going when you tried to shift into first? Above 3+ mph, there's really no need to shift into 1st ... 2nd has a *huge* range.

In all cars the synchros don't line up when the speed is coming down so that you cannot get it into first until you are almost stopped. First is designed to get you going from a standstill. Pretty much anything faster and you want second. Don't try to force anything or you can easily damage the tranny.

dont go into first until you've come to a complete stop. if you're not gonna completely stop...then second is the gear you wanna be in.

this is what i keep repeating to my friend who is learning to drive a stick on my Z

i wasnt going to engage first untill i fully stoped. When i say engage, i mean let me foot off the clutch. I just wanted to have the stick in first while having the clutch down so that when i do stop i can quickly start moving.

It's not a good idea to downshift to 1st until you come to a complete stop, you said it wouldn't go into 1st but more than likely you "could" force it. But let me say again this is BAD

Don't do it, you're better off pulling a rolling 2nd.

Mine will slip right into 1st, smooth as silk, without any problem, under 10 mph.

Potato boy gets tempered pretty often... don't mind him.

Back on subject, if you ARE NOT SOLID at downshifting... FORGET about going to 1st.

I'm very comfortable with it, but 9 out of 10 times its VERY unnecessary in the Z. Our 2nd gear is already very short. In the few rare times I want to go down to first from a roll, I made sure I had the revs high enough and I slid it easily into 1st.

The shift goes VERY smoothly if you've rev matched... if not... it's near impossible without forcing it. btw... you force it, you break it.

This problem, I believe, is the point of double clutching (at least in my old car that's what I had to do and it worked fine)

Yeah sorry about that. I have a problem keeping patience with people who, hmm, let's say, choose to ignore the obvious. Happens a lot with you to, eh, Evil? Anyways, sometimes it is better to keep it simple. Again, sorry if my comment offended you.

I think the point is that tranny designers do this on purpose because you'll way over-rev the synchros if you try to engage them at anything above ten MPH.

So if you could do it, you'ld cause tranny damage because it just can't take that.

first is only for starting, it wont go in so you dont damage your tranny... keep it insecond and do a caifornia stop... but i like to start in 2nd. I like to show off when people are in the car.

Now you've got the idea on how to handle sarcasm! Some things are serious and good information and some aren't. It shouldn't be hard to distinguish... Man, I was worried about your feelings for a while. Ok, well, take care.
